Orson Scott Card is Not a Fan of People Who are Not Fans of His

Orson Scott Card

Can’t we all just get along? No? Okay.

Apparently some people are not happy with Orson Scott Card’s anti-gay views. Card is a Mormon, and apparently something about the religion means they don’t approve of dudes bromancing other dudes, and gals not needing dudes. As a result, he’s been pretty outspoken about it, which led some group somewhere to start a petition to boycott the upcoming adaptation of “Ender’s Game”, based on the epic book by Card.

The studio has been mysteriously quiet (gee, I wonder why) on this issue, but Card himself has finally spoken out about the fledgling boycott. He writes:

Ender’s Game is set more than a century in the future and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot. The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to any marriage contract recognized by any other state.

Now it will be interesting to see whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute.

Orson Scott Card

Well, that’ll solve everything.

NOT.

Card also recently lost out on a D.C. comic book writing gig because of his disapproval of bros shacking up with other bros, so it’s not like this is something new for him or the studio. My guess is that the studio is hoping this will either blow over, or that most moviegoers will never hear about this controversy. Or if they do hear about it, won’t care. Not all of us are incapable of separating the man from his art, after all.

“Ender’s Game”, starring Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, Abigail Breslin, Harrison Ford, and Hailee Steinfeld opens November 1st.
