By George, Independence Day 2 is Coming in 2015!
Holy crap. It’s finally happening.
A gazillion years in the making (or close enough, anyway), it looks like Roland Emmerich has finally been able to convince 20th Century Fox to foot the bill for a sequel to his 1996 monster hit “Independence Day”.
The film has officially been slotted by Fox as hitting theaters in two years, on July 3rd, 2015. Just before Independence Day. Get it? I wonder why they didn’t open it on Independence Day, though. That would seem like a natural tie-in, what but what do I know.
No word if Will Smith is reprising his role of hotshot fighter pilot Captain Steven Hiller. (Although I suppose by now he would be a Major or General or Admiral or whatever. Just not a Captain anymore.) If he is coming back, I wonder if the rather spectacular tanking of his latest sci-fi film, “After Earth” had anything to do with convincing him.
Emmerich has been talking up a sequel to “ID4″ for years now, but it’s something of a revelation that he’s finally getting it off the ground. You have to wonder what took everyone so long to come back. “Independence Day” only shocked the world by making $817 million worldwide, after all. And that’s in 1996 dollars.
