And not just one measly sequel, too, but two. Or at least that’s the word from IESB, who says the deal is all but done for Smith to come back to one of the first movies that made him a bankable star, presumably as fighter jock Captain Steven Hiller, the character he played in the first one.
According to IESB’s sources, the studio still hasn’t decided if they want to shoot the sequels back to back, but the first movie could shoot as early as 2011. Of course, with a film as potentially expensive as “ID4″ (Smith’s salary alone is $20 million up front, plus royalties), shooting it back to back would be the sure way to save cost.
Also expected back is director Roland Emmerich, who has always said he wanted to do sequels to the 1996 hit, a film that, back then was so good I saw it twice in theaters. Looking back on it, it was pretty … bleh. The aliens were really, really stupid. Who knew you could “hack” an alien race’s computer with a Mac? Go figure.
