While James Cameron was attending the Visual Effects Society Awards in Hollywood over the weekend, SciFiWire got in a few questions about — of course — “Avatar 2″. According to Cameron, the sequel won’t be called “Avatar”, since the hero Jake Sully is no longer an avatar at the end of the movie. Which makes sense. Then Cameron adds that the sequel would delve even more into the spiritual aspect of the Na’vi culture.
“I think we can see that there’s a greater receptivity to it on the part of the audience than certainly the studio originally imagined. We pared back on it a fair bit in the first film, and I think we can go farther in that direction and not alienate people.”
This would seem to contradict previous reports that had an “Avatar” sequel leaving the planet Pandora for other remote parts of the universe. Honestly, I would have liked to see more of an expansion on the film’s universe instead of just getting even deeper into what makes the blue cat people — er, I mean, the Na’vi — tick.
