Voltron Looks at Expansion, Movie Still in Limbo

What are the chances that we’ll actually see a live-action “Voltron” movie on the big screen anytime soon? I can’t see it actually happening. Mind you, I’m all for it, and I think it could really work, but I don’t know if the franchise has enough name-recognition among Joblo ala “Transformers” to justify the potentially huge cost of a big sci-fi movie about five giant robot lions that transforms into an even bigger, giant robot guy.

I just don’t see it ever happening. At least, not as a live-action movie.

The last time we heard about “Voltron”, notable producers including Charles Roven of “The Dark Knight” fame had come onboard to give moving the movie idea forward a shot. They are now looking for a writer to work on a story from the ground up, apparently having ditched the post-apocalyptic/post-alien invasion storyline?

THR now reports that talent agency UTA has come onboard the “Voltron” train and plans to expand the property into other areas. The best news for “Voltron” fans may be a new animated series on a cable network. Animation seems like the way to go with this. It’ll be cheaper, and the idea has flourished in animation in the past, so there’s no reason why it won’t again. Also on the docket, video games and toys based on the property.

I’m still hopeful they can get a movie up and running, but I can’t say as if I’m holding my breath.

Killer robot lions from outer space? Oh my.
