The last time we heard about any movement on the “Voltron” live-action movie, it was August 2008, when we heard from a movie site that the film might have landed a director. Well that hasn’t really been confirmed by the trades, and judging by the fact that we haven’t heard a peep from a “Voltron” movie since probably means that rumor was just that, a rumor that didn’t come to pass. So what’s the latest word from Hollywood? Movement, it would appear.
This latest news is a little bit more solid, in that it comes from an industry blog and not just another random movie site. According to THR’s Risky Biz Blog, Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven, Richard Suckle and Steve Alexander are ready to take “Voltron” and push the film into production. Or at least, push it out of development hell where it currently resides, and has been for the last few years over at the Mark Gordon Company.
“Voltron” was a television show from the 1980’s that features five robot lions that could combine to form one super giant robot. The mechanized lions are controlled by human pilots, and if my memory serves, they always ended up fighting giant aliens or some such. You know, typical Japanese TV sci-fi — it’s always about the giant aliens.
The most recent script of “Voltron” was set in a post-apocalyptic America that had been invaded by superior alien forces, where survivors stumbled across the robot lions and uses them to defeat the invaders. It was written by Justin Marks, and has been given some high marks (no pun intended) by those who have read it. Of course, that was before Justin Marks came out with the atrocious “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li”. After seeing that movie, I have a hard time believing Marks’ script for “Voltron” could be anything other than awful, but hey, maybe he actually wrote something decent. It could happen.
Chances are, with new producers onboard, a new script will be commissioned. I don’t really dig setting the movie in a post-apocalyptic America. Isn’t the original “Voltron” supposed to be set in an alien world? But hey, at least it’s moving again, right?

I think if Earth is involved, it should be like the cartoon where there is a planetary alliance.
Definitely. The alliance is what originally fuels the urge and provides the means of the five lions resurrection. Without the alliance there would have been no reforming of voltron after hagar split him into the five individual lions!
