Like Trek? Then you’ve probably been liking it more than Eugene Roddenberry, only son of the late, great Gene Roddenberry, and who apparently didn’t have any idea that his daddy’s creation is beloved by a whole lotta people until Gene passed away. Dude must have been living in a cave all this time. Hey, that’s not me talking, that’s what Eugene (aka Rod) says in this trailer for Scott Colthorp’s Trek documentary “Trek Nation”.
I’ve always been a fan of Trek, though I’ve never worn a Star Fleet Uniform to a Trek convention. Heck, I’ve never come even 100 miles of a Trek convention, but I find it amusing that Rod claims to never have enjoyed any of the Trek stuff until his dad passed away. Talk about being oblivious, especially when your household was probably crawling with Trek stuff. He didn’t once look at the Enterprise and go, “Wow, that’s kinda cool?” Then again, maybe he was, you know, dating chicks and stuff, who knows.
The trailer is perhaps a tad too serious about the subject matter. (Really, guys? Abu Ghraib? Really?) The music alone is way too precious and too “try hard”, though I really got a kick out of the dude in the Borg costume. Imagine having something like that stashed away under your bed. Wow. There are also a ton of interviews with Trek cast/crews past, present, and future, including J.J. Abrams, the guy who resurrected the Trek franchise with last year’s “Star Trek”.
For a much lighter look at Trek nation, check out the two “Trekkies” documentaries that came out a while back. Unlike “Trek Nation”, “Trekkies” has Tasha Yar narrating. Sorry, Rod, but Denise Crosby is way easier on the eyes, dude.
