Disney’s live-action adaptation of “John Carter of Mars” continues to roll on for a 2010 start date, with three more castmembers joining the burgeoning production, to be based on the fictional works of Edgar Rice Burroughs.
With two American actors already cast in the leads, and another one in an equally important role, three English actors have joined the cast. Samantha Morton, Dominic West and Polly Walker will be joining leads Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins, who will be playing John Carter and his Martian lady love, respectively. The third American, Willem Dafoe, will play the Martian Tars Tarkas.
THR says that Morton (“The Minority Report”) will play Sola, the daughter of Dafoe’s Tars Tarkas, who must hide her softer side from her warmongering race, while West (last seen worming his way through “300″) will be Sab Than, prince of the Zodangans who believes he is entitled to rule Mars. Meanwhile, Walker (Rome, Caprica, below) will join the villainous ranks as Sarkoja, a merciless and tyrannical Thark.
Andrew Stanton will be directing the movie for Disney, which will star Kitsch as a Civil War-era human who is somehow transported to Mars, where he finds himself in the middle of a Martian war. Don’t you just hate it when that happens?
Production on the sure-to-be huge movie is expected to commence sometime next year for a 2011 release.
