This Is Not A WatchMen Review
Watchmen (2009) Movie — By endymi0n on March 7, 2009
Of course I went to see it, on Imax, the only way big budget action or Sci-Fi movies should be seen. I really enjoyed it. Since I didn’t read the graphic novel, I am mostly in the dark on how well it translated to film.
Let me say that it worked on it’s very own as a film. I want to say first that what I took away from the movie primarily was the fantastic performance of Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach. He blew my doors off. Worth the price of admission all by himself.
Watching the world of Sci-Fi culture as I do, I’d like to note that it seems to me that the Sci-Fi community was very deeply invested in having this film be respected and understood. I think many in the community feel that Watchmen is literature and that the medium it was presented in initially is disrespected by critics of more mainstream fiction and art. We wanted the graphic novel to be translated well to screen so we could demonstrate the depth that Science Fiction could reach.
I just don’t believe for a second that any of us needs to apologize or feel the need to rationalize what we understand and believe is art. I don’t care if the wider world gets it or not. Science Fiction occupies a wide range of material. Some of it is art and some of it is not. Please have pride in what you love. Science Fiction helped me be the person I am. I am better for having it in my life.

I have not yet read the actual graphic novel, so I am not able to compare this movie with the original. Considering the storyline I feel it as a superb flop. The characters neither had strong roles to play. I thought that the action scenes would be similar to movie 300, but it was not even 25% near to that! My $20 ticket was a total waste.
the movie rendition of Watchmen is a visual and psychological cornucopia — definitely worth watching
