The UK’s Primeval Headed to Big Screen in U.S.

Not content to just port the UK series over to the US, Warner Bros. has bought the movie rights to the UK show Primeval with an eye towards turning it into one of those big summer event films full of dinosaurs, time travel, and one presumes, an elite squad of pretty people trying to stop them. Variety reports that the WB has hired Akiva Goldsman and Kerry Foster to produce the film for a U.S. audience, which will mean first hiring a screenwriter.

In the series, ferocious prehistoric and futuristic creatures appear through wormhole time portals, and a covert team headed by an evolutionary scientist tries to close the doors and quietly thwart the creatures.

The series, which has run three seasons, was co-created by Tim Haines and Adrian Hodges and produced by Haines’ shingle, Impossible Pictures.

WB and Goldsman will transplant the action to the U.S. and ramp up the spectacle.

The show is still going on in the UK, and is currently in its third season. The article says the show has appeared on the Sci Fi Channel, but I’ve never seen it. It’s also available on BBC America, though it might be best just to buy the DVD set. Unlike in the U.S., the UK’s version of a full season is much smaller, episodes-wise, so you could probably get caught up pretty fast if you were so inclined.
