While “Star Trek” was, on the whole, a pretty awesome affair, there were a few troublesome moments. The whole ditch Kirk out a porthole onto the Planet Of The Old Spock thing had a faint odour of cheese and I’m afraid Nero the misunderstood villain was a .1 on the tribble scale of soft and fluffy.
There needs to be a change for the upcoming sequel, now scheduled for landing on June 29th, 2012. Kurtzman and Orci, screen writers of the first and future writers of the second, agree that for number 2, the villain has to bring the naughty space sauce.
Kurtzman in his own words:
I think our idea on this is that the first of any series is about them coming together or the formation. I couldn’t really tell you what Jeff Bridges was doing in Iron Man, but it doesn’t matter at all because it is all about Iron Man becoming Iron Man. Whereas I think sequels are very much about the villain. Because while [in the first film] the villain serves to bring the crew together, the second one I think has to be a true challenging of what that family is about. That is why Wrath of Khan was so amazing. Khan tested each one of them and ultimately asked for the [ultimate] sacrifice, and that is why that movie held up so well.
The villain for the next movie is going to be Khan. Get used to it. You need a mighty strong actor for this part. I’m very interested to see who it will be. Thanks io9 for the tip.

The Next Star Trek Will Have A Better Villain but no imagination or originality.
The villain for the next movie is going to be Khan. Get used to it, no I won’t, nor will you get my movie money for it as I’m not going to see it. We warned you it was a bad idea now I sincerely hope it fails to get the crowd’s attention. Hollywood needs a mighty strong actor for this part, but no effort for new script, all we need to do copy, paste, rinse and repeat. I’m not interested to see who it will be. Thanks but no thanks io9 for the tip.
There are millions of best sellers in the universe and Hollywood is too lazy to get off their butts and be original for a change. All we hear in the 21st century is remake and rehash, rinse and repeat but not this time you just killed the whole franchise for me this time my Star Trek movie collection stops at #11. Get used to it and thanks for nothing.
On a positive note I won’t have to wait for this movie. The day it comes out I’ll watch a spectacular and unique film on Blu-ray called “Avatar”.
Unique as in graphics? Or unique as in a unique retelling of the Pocahontas story?
I DEFINITELY enjoyed avatar. But the storyline felt sucked up by other storylines.
Not sure if he was dropping a hint about the sequel, or just using Wrath of Khan to show what every Trek sequel needs to live up to. My take is it’s the latter, saying they need to create a villian on par with Khan. Might be a tad premature to annoint a Star Trek 2 remake as JJ’s second Trek film, either way I’m anxiously awaiting it.
Just whatever you do JJ, PLEASE don’t remake Insurrection.
Admittedly, I’m disappointed to see another reused villain. I was also disappointed to hear Dark Knight would be about Joker. But how incredible did that turn out? And how little like the original?
Here’s the thing. They may be reusing a basic story-line, but this is J.J. Abrams we’re talking about here. He has a brilliant mind for stories. The Star Trek sequel will blow the first movie out of the water. I’m sure of it.
He already gave himself free reign with the show, using the alternate reality plot. So if the wrath of kahn story lines up too much, he’ll just be wasting that. I have a feeling that he’ll turn it into something brand new.
My two cents…
I have loved Star Trek from my childhood. I will continue to be open to the new movies that come out but, I really think it needs new stories and fresh ideals. It’s a new timeline so make the most of it. You have the whole alpha quadrent of the universe to work with so be daring, surprise us and do something original with Gene Roddenberry’s masterpiece. JJ is at the helm of the greatest Sci Fi opera ever written. He needs to compose his own score. There’s no reason to you reuse storylines or characters. So JJ go ahead make our sequel. We’ll be waiting.
Let them eat static…
So WAIT WAIT WAIT! If the time line has changed in the new star trek universe then why should we think kirk ever even meets khan? and besides the wrath of Khan takes place so long after they first meet him how are they gonna meet him, defeat him and have him get his wrath on all in the same movie???
Hold on a minute! In the original series Kirk replaced Captain Pike as the Captain of the Enterprise afer Pike dissappeard. He turns up in “The Menagerie”.
Thisis a differnet timeline, so there as yet the younger Kirk hasn’t even met Khan as in the episode “Space Seed”. The villans can’t be The Borg because they’re still in The Delta Sector and don’t know of the existence of Humans. I belive there’s going to be a massive war with the Klingons!! The last two movies have each had Romulans in them. A really cool story would be the crew from “USS Defiant” left behind in of the alternate universe and some of the cast from “Enterprise”. It would be interesting to match the two ships up. The new “NCC-1701 Enterprise” of JJ Abrams vs the “NCC-1764 Defiant” from the two part episodes “Enterprise: In A Mirror, Darkly”.
yes about the Kirk and Pike thing but, we have to keep in mind that everything that happened prior to the new movie still happened. all of the series “Enterprise”, even though it all seemed to happen in Cmdr. Rikers Holo-program, was effected by the timeline change, nor was the fact that the crew of 1701-E still saved the Phoenix from the Borg. so you see, it could be that some how the Borg detected the presence of their own kind in the 21st century Earth and having no Trans-warp conduits in the alpha quadrant they had to send a ship at warp to Earth an it would get there about the time of the second or third movie. Now, not that I think the Borg will ever even be mentioned in the new series of movies, but my point is that nearly any “bad guy” is a candidate for upcoming movies. the time line change does not effect the fact that Khan’s ship was still launched in 1996 or whenever it was and even in the new time line the Botany Bay is still somewhere out there. However the movie would have to be about them meeting Khan the first time, not Khan getting his revenge. We have to remember that when characters from an alt. time line cross into another they still exist. like when Tasha Yar went back in time to an alternate time on NCC 1701 C. she still existed in the changed or restored time line, she even changed it by giving birth to a half Romulan daughter.
I feel confident we can assume the time line will not be restored. Therefore all of the classic series can and may be “rewritten” anyway Paramount sees fit to rewrite them. Which could be a good thing. I just hope they make the props and exterior of the Enterprise resemble the classic more in the next movie. Think of how cool it could be to see Charlie X or Trelane if come back with a vengeance.
I think Khan will be the next villian. bringing back old villians is a guaranteed formula for revamping franchises. The Joker of course is a good example which worked twice; in both movie instances you bring in something new, a better actor to give it a different flare. So it will be important who you cast.
One question is are there any rules regarding the race of the character? Khan was a Sikh warrior from India I suppose but Montalban was obviously Latino. It probably can be easily explained as the genetically altered superhuman could be a mixture of various races and not really one pure racial mixture. Thus, that opens the door for a variety of actors. Rumors are the JJ may pick an actor from his TV series yet again but that might be a mistake (e.g., Nestor Carbonell from Batman looks the part and is a good actor but he isn’t a mainstream character actor that could bring the draw of a Nicholson or Ledger)
The actor has to have some degree of physicality and charismatic appeal (looks so that you “can admire him at the same time” as Kirk explained to Spock) or else it won’t work. The best actor from this criterion is probably like say The Rock or Matthew McConaughey but I’m not sure if Duane or Matt can pull it off with their boyish goody goody Teddy Bear Disney charms. Brad Pitt on top of Clooney too.
Javier Bardem was very effective in No Country for Old Men. He is big enough if he can get into shape to play such a role and can make the role really scary if put to the test. Same can be said for Daniel Day Lewis as an actor but we don’t know how his physicality aspect and 50+ age would project.
If The Rock plays Khan, Star Trek will be forever dead to me. I think a very lesser known actor will be in order.
