The Live Action Star Wars Series Is Still Alive: An Update

The creative wheel spins deliberately down there at Skywalker Ranch in Marin County, California, the home of all things Lucas. I don’t mind that, because crafting a live action “Star Wars” series worthy of the spirit of the thing is a job that requires great care and hopefully many screenings of the original three movies.

It seems that a creative direction or two is being set. Author Karen Traviss, author of numerous “Star Wars” novels had her Boba Fett novel canceled because her plan for the character was about to conflict with a future Lucas project (see her statement on this here). For those of you short on Boba Fett lore, here is the Boba Wiki entry.

Boba Fett is a character in the Star Wars fictional universe. A bounty hunter hired by Darth Vader to find the Millennium Falcon, he is a major villain in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) establishes Boba Fett’s back story as a clone of Jango Fett, a bounty hunter who raises Boba as a son. The Star Wars Expanded Universe expands on Fett’s origins and career as a bounty hunter. Fett’s air of danger and mystery have created a cult following for the character, who has been merchandised across multiple media. Fett might be part of the live-action Star Wars series under development.[1]

That about sums it up. Very interesting character to base a series on if that becomes the case. Expect a much darker and more talky effort for this slice of Star Wars. George Lucas was interviewed by Total Film Mag and had this to say about how the drama was going to be cast.

It’s [a] lot more talky. It’s more of what I would call a soap opera with a bunch of personal dramas in it. It’s not really based on action-adventure films from the ’30s – it’s actually more based on film noir movies from the ’40s!”

The time period we are expecting for the series plops the action right after the first Death Star was torpedoed and during the time when the Jedi were being hunted and eliminated by Darth Vader and the Emperor. Obviously, we are all hoping that the series, whenever it sees the light of day, will be great. I’ll take a leap of faith here and say that George knows there’s a lot on the line here for him, reputation wise. Cross your fingers. Thanks io9.
