The Day the Earth Stood Still Remake is So Good, Even Aliens will Love It
Sci-Fi Movie News, The Day the Earth Stood Still (Remake 2008) Movie — By Nix on December 10, 2008
20th Century Fox, the studio behind this Friday’s “The Day The Earth Stood Still” remake is so sure about the awesomeness of their remake that they’re beaming the movie into outer space for aliens to see. No, I shit you not. They are beaming the movie out into outer space. Obviously this is a sad, sad publicity ploy for a movie that has been bashed up and down, side to side, and in and out by the fanboy base on the Internet for being, well, pandering and just downright sucky. I don’t think I’ve read a single decent review for this thing, which isn’t a surprise. It’s a totally unnecessary remake of a classic where the main storyline has been changed because Hollywood is currently so in love with itself for “battling” Global Warming that it’s back is sore from all the back slapping it’s doing.
And so, this from IO9, a transcript of a red carpet interview with the film’s director, a clearly embarrassed Scott Derrickson:
IO0: So you’re beaming The Day The Earth Stood Still into space?
Scott Derrickson (director): I know. Can you believe that?
No, I can not. Why did you decide to do that?
I have no idea. Somebody did, and told me they did it. And then I found that out and thought, “Boy I hope I’m not the one responsible for bringing the evil aliens. I hope whoever finds it is nice.”
I was going to say, is that really the message that you want to send to another galaxy? Are you happy with the message?
Yeah, very with what the movie has to say. I do think the movie is a pretty accurate reflection of human nature. It’s what the original was. I tried to be faithful and true to that basic story and that basic theme.
The movie does end on a cliffhanger, you don’t know what’s going to happen next. Would you ever consider making a sequel?
Oooh. You know, probably not. Never say never though, how many directors have said that and then done it. I have no intention to at this point.
Don’t worry about it, Scott, no one’s going to be clamoring for you to do a remake after this thing opens and flops around like a dead, bloated fish this Friday. You know, like Keanu’s acting in the movie. How amazing is it that they managed to get the most robotic actor to play an emotionless alien? Best. Casting. EVER.

Though I did find the movie watchable, I really did NOT like the kid and how they wrote around his character. Antagonistic little brat needed a heavy hand on the ass is what I thought. It did nothing for the story line.
And uh….this movie did not strike me as a global warming slant. It struck me as more about environmentalism period. And yes, on the whole, we are killing this planet. Many animal species being hunted to extinction, their habitats all shrinking, placer and strip and pit mining, over fishing just to name a few direct things. Overpopulation will also become a problem in a big way as our ability to feed the planet slowely dwindles away. Polution is NOT our main hurdle to face, and it is not even mentioned in the movie.
And some of the action sequences were over the top. Not as horribly bad as that last Indiana Jones movie (really damn bad movie…take the action out, you got 30 minutes of story…that sucks lemon Mr Speilburg, WTF were you thinking?)
