The CW’s “Supernatural” is pretty much the only decent thing on that young-people-having-sex-obsessed network that I bother to DVR. The show is currently in its fifth season and in the middle of its demon apocalypse storyline, with Satan and the Angels fighting for the survival of the planet and the boys Winchester stuck dab smack in the middle. The show’s creator and mastermind, Eric Kripke has always said that he’s planned the show as a 5-year story, with that arc wrapping up at the end of this season. Now comes word that the CW has renewed the show past the demon apocalypse storyline, which means changes are afoot.
The biggest news is that, along with the Season 6 renewal, showrunner Eric Kripke will be stepping down from his post, and handing the job over to long-time “Supernatural” writer/producer Sera Gamble. Word is, that while Kripke will no longer be the day-to-day genius behind what goes down in the world of “Supernatural”, he’ll still hang around as producer and basically mentor.
The other good news? Kripke isn’t leaving because he was kicked off the team. Nope. In fact, Kripke is only giving up his showrunner title because he has a big deal with Warner Bros. that will allow him to create new properties for the studio.
In a lot of ways, I have mucho respect for Kripke’s decision to step away from the show now. By the time the Season 5 finale rolls around and the demon apocalypse is concluded, Kripke will have successfully finished his 5-year story arc that he has been telling since the very beginning, so what’s there left to do? You have to give him credit for realizing there’s nothing else he wants to tell that would require him to put aside his future ambitions, and instead hand over the reins to someone else. And as mentioned, Gamble has been with the show from the very beginning, so it’s not like a Season 6 will be completely rudderless.

In the last Supernatural episode, Sam, Dean, and Cas met up with a naked, overweight Cupid. Pure genius.
