Primer District 9 Moon Children of men Donnie Darko Star Trek 2009 Serenity Wall-e (the first hour is pretty great) Star wars clone wars collection on DVD (so much better than the sequel movies) minority report Honorable mention Equilibrium I, robot Sunshine Vanilla Sky (not a fan of cruise but this has a pretty good sci-fi twist ending) 9 (the animated movie about intelligent toys in a post apocalyptic world) Riddick AI Here’s my list in no particular order since i find the original list to be sorely lacking or including movies that had no right being on a BEST list.

It's a perfect example of science fiction (i.e. a social commentary on human issues of today within the setting of a futuristic or alternate timeline), and the story is told beautifully. The special effects look real enough and, most importantly, the characters are believable.
