It looks like Chuck is becoming a nice little hub for former Superman-verse actors. First Brandon Routh, the most recent big-screen Superman in Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns”, was announced as a recurring character on the show’s upcoming third season as a potential love interest for Sarah, the show’s female lead, and now Kristin Kreuk, Lana Lang from Smallville, will also be recurring as a love interest for Chuck, the show’s male lead.
According to Ausiello over at EW, Kreuk, who recently took a stab at a movie career with the poorly received (and just Godawful “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li”) will play Hannah, a girl Chuck meets on a flight to Paris. Later, Hannah gets laid off from her glamorous publishing job and ends up working at the Buy More, the same place where Chuck works.
Meanwhile, Routh will be playing a character name Shaw, who is described as “a mysterious new spy who takes control as the new leader of Operation Bartwoski, becoming a mentor to Chuck and a rival in his affections for Sarah.” Routh’s Shaw will make his first appearance in the show’s fourth episode.
Obviously the purposes of characters like Kreuk’s and Routh’s is to get someone between Chuck and Sarah, since having your two leads come together would just be, well, too easy and not enticing enough for the audience. Of course, one of the best sci-fi shows on TV, Farscape easily bucked that trend, but leave it to network TV to follow the usual formula to the very bitter end.
