Summit Developing a Push TV Series

You probably missed it when it premiered last year, but Paul McGuigan’s “Push” was one of those movies you were either sold on purely on the basis of hearing its premise, or you just didn’t give a flying frig. I happen to love the idea of a movie about people with psychic abilities, sort of like “The X-Men” if all the superheroes were selfish and didn’t really give a damn about saving the world, and minus all the silly costumes. Well if you were a fan of the movie, as I was, you’re gonna love this news: Summit Entertainment, which released the film in 2009, has just announced that they are developing a TV show based on the movie.

To that end, Summit has attached “X-Men” and “Watchmen” writer David Hayter to pen the pilot script, though no word yet on how closely the TV show will mirror the movie. The original itself starred Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning, and Camilla Belle as fugitive physics hiding out in Hong Kong, and Djimon Hounsou as the Government suit chasing them. Though the film made $50 million worldwide, it was mostly ignored in the States, and chances are you probably stumbled across the film on DVD.

One of the movie’s more clever ideas was a psychics arms race, with the world’s powerful nations stockpiling on psychic armies. Alas, that idea wasn’t really followed up fully in the movie, but it would definitely make a great ongoing premise for a TV show. Obviously the movie’s stars won’t be back for the TV show, not that it matters; like the “Highlander” franchise, a TV version should follow different characters, while still existing within the same universe. This could be very interesting, indeed.

So, uh, when do we get our tight generic black costumes?

This rules! Nobody at all saw “Push” mostly because it came out right after “Jumper” which was just godawful. But Push was really creative in its powers; especially the main one of mental manipulation. The movie seemed a little rushed and over-edited, but on the whole it well worth the time to check it out. I’ll definitely be looking forward to the pilot episode, especially with David Hayter writing.
