Stargate: Universe TV Series to be Set on a Ship

I had heard rumblings about a new Stargate TV series to replace the departed Stargate: SG1 and the aging Stargate: Atlantis, but that was a while ago. Now, Gateworld has new details about the upcoming series, to be called “Stargate: Universe”, and as the name may already hint at, the series will be set onboard a ship built by the Ancients. According to Stargate producer Brad Wright, who conceived of the third series with co-producer Robert C. Cooper, the ship was an experiment by the Ancients many years ago, but was abandoned after they ascended. Now it’s up to the Stargate team to finish the job.

“The idea of Stargate Universe is that it is set on a ship that was part of an Ancient experiment that was set in motion probably millions of years ago — one that they never saw to fruition, but that we can,” Wright told GateWorld exclusively. “They got busy with the whole ascension thing.”

The experiment is “to send a ship across the universe, and to send one ahead of it to seed the galaxies with Stargates, and that they would one day use the ninth chevron to get there [to the ship]. And that’s what Stargate Universe is.”

That doesn’t explain it? Here’s more:

Millions of years ago (before their conflict with the Wraith and possibly even before they moved Atlantis to the Pegasus Galaxy), the show would reveal, the Ancients sent out two ships: an automated vessel to place Stargates throughout multiple galaxies in our universe, and a second ship to follow up and explore.

A standard, 7-symbol gate address allows for travel within the same galaxy. Use of the Stargate’s eighth chevron allows for travel to a different galaxy. And the ninth chevron will allow the team to reach this second, still unmanned Ancient ship.

I can dig it. After its cancellation, I sort of miss Stargate: SG1 now. A new series — perhaps with the same cast? — would just rule.

I hope they bring in Jack O`neill clone into Stargate Universe,
as a character. I will miss watching stargate atlantis after it ends this season, but I believe it will make the show more interesting when Stargate Universe comes out. I am guessing it must be hard to be the producer and the creater of stargate, so I respect them, so keep on coming with stargate`s series.

  • shawn

yea i mean totally cool(not gonna have origanal cast this new series is aimed at a “younger” age group) but bring it on as a new series not as a replacement for stargate atlantis.

  • James Wallace

  • James Wallace

my fav characters r that one lady with the blond hair from SG-1 and that guy with the glasses from SG-1 and i also like that one guy with the short hair that looks mean all the time from Stargate Atlantis

The Stargate franchise blazes forward into new territory with Stargate Universe, a brand new television series from the creators of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. The SCI FI Channel announced today that it has picked up the new series for 2009.

Casting calls have gone out for the third series’ main characters, and today the short character break-downs arrived at GateWorld.

    Colonel Everett Young
    40′s handsome, capable, former SG team leader. Like the Jack O’Neill of ten years ago, but Young’s edges have tended to sharpen over time. He requested permission to serve the remainder of his commission on Earth upon marrying his wife, Hailey, two years ago, but for now he’s temporary commander of a secret off world base. The loss of two members of his team several years ago has taught him never to take anything for granted, and be prepared for anything. He stays on top of his team so they stay alive. STAR NAMES ONLY. SERIES REGULAR;

This should be Kaven Smith!! They can always promote Major Lorne to Colonel, he sure deserves it and change the name from Colonel Everett Young to Colonel Lorne.

    What do you think?

  • Duh

Sounds like Star Trek Voyager too me. I hope….I hope I’m wrong!!

  • Dann

Could this be a soft rehash of Babylon 5?

  • PJ

sweet maybe in this series they can announce the stargate to the public and also have this new grave enemy like the ouri in Sg-1 and the wraith in SG-A but i dont know cant wait.

Stargate Universe – WOW – This is GREAT news BUT – I am hoping this does not turn into a Star Trek Voyager – Deep Space Nine type of show. That would ruin the whole Stargate ethos for me – BRING BACK JACK as well

  • wilmens

I hope that in stargate universe there vill be the sg -1 team and sga team. It’s sad that the atlantis serieas are don bot the stargate universe look’s coool!!!

  • jamand

In response to WILMENS – didn’t say that there was anything wrong with ST Voyager or ST:DS9 – but they are old and tired now compared to the possibilities of this new Stargate Universe – the comparison I was trying to point out was that – this new Stargate Universe could easily become a cross to bear for the writers and the series producers if it is not made correctly – we really do not need a comparison (which might happen) between the two ST’s and Stargate – the Stargate series has infinitely more credibility and potential then Star Trek has now – the problem here is – the Star Trek ‘team’ have totally run out of ideas, as the newly announced ST film proves – yet another, going back to the start way of thinking – they tried that with Enterprise and it bombed – it was awful.

  • Robin Evans

SGU is such a crock – its a cheap copy of Stargate – I’ll never watch another episode of this crap…

  • Inimou
