Stargate Universe Needs Your Help

Joseph Mallozzi, producer and writer for Stargate Universe, is off by himself, sequestered in his basement and writing new ways for the Destiny’s crew to get into trouble. With trouble in mind, he’s now asking the fans, that’s me and you, for some input on the show. He has asked the following question via his blog

So, as we prep for the show’s second season – and keeping in mind you haven’t seen the more action-oriented back half of season one – I’d like to know:

1. Which character would you like to see explored more?

2. What aspect of the show would you like to see exploited more?

3. What aspect of the show would prefer to see minimized?

4. What was your favorite “story moment” from the first half of SGU’s first season?

5. What element (I’m leaving this one wide open) would you like to see added to the series as a whole?

Well, since you asked Joe.

1. The girls on the show is the obvious answer. They’ve had a hard time getting revved up. It’s time for the space chicks to kick a little ass. If you’re going to showcase the space racks, you need to let the girls lock and load some too. Balance is everything.

2. People walk around on the Destiny like it’s their junior high school. The ship is ancient! It’s dark and echoey. There’s gotta be creatures someplace. I want to see long views down corridors where the end is in darkness, except, you can kinda see, something , slinking low at the edge of the light, something…that’s probably my imagination. Probably.

3. The Earth stuff. This is Sci-Fi. I know the stones thing is supposed to help with character development but it’s not helping the show in general. This is a castaways show. It’s about isolation, loneliness and hopefully, paranoia. I want to see desperation and despair. Letting people go home every week to see Mom almost lets all that air out of the balloon.

4. Rush getting left on the planet was epic. It was awesome. Gives me a lot of hope the arc of the show is heading in the correct direction. To infinity…and beyond!

5. We need more scary. We need more exploration of the ship. Space 1999 this thing. Eerie it up. Show us glimpses of mysterious happenings on the ship. Scenes of old battles, desiccated alien corpses, untranslatable messages scrawled in alien blood. We need mystery.

That’s it for now kids. Stargate Universe starts up again in April.

    1. Which character would you like to see explored more?
ELI, IS HE REALLY A GENIUS? The sub cast. Greer… Rush, a little more verbal from him and not just arguments but science would be very nice.

    2. What aspect of the show would you like to see exploited more?
The ship is very large. More of the ship than 3 rooms would be nice to see with surprises around various corners, other lifeforms, creatures, janitor robots, whatever, but the ship would be nice to see in the stages as it was millions of years ago.

    3. What aspect of the show would prefer to see minimized?
Stones. They were used too frequently, too soon and ruined many of your plans for using them down the road, now, people will see the stones and want to turn off the tv. It would be nice if someone would apologize for the over use of them in the scripts.

    4. What was your favorite “story moment” from the first half of SGU’s first season?
The potential Christian faith of Lt.

    5. What element (I’m leaving this one wide open) would you like to see added to the series as a whole?
Briefings. I know, boring. See the writers and everyone at the studio have the luxury of considering story lines and solving all the problems with the story lines internally. Viewers have to watch closely or the directors usually skip passed or quickly cover a detail that you writers may have discussed for hours, days or weeks. Viewers only get one shot and solutions to problems or key elements are usually not as pronounced on air as they are in the writers room. So do a better job explaining yourselves or do more briefings so that people can see what they may have missed.
