Stargate Universe Needs Your Help

Joseph Mallozzi, producer and writer for Stargate Universe, is off by himself, sequestered in his basement and writing new ways for the Destiny’s crew to get into trouble. With trouble in mind, he’s now asking the fans, that’s me and you, for some input on the show. He has asked the following question via his blog

So, as we prep for the show’s second season – and keeping in mind you haven’t seen the more action-oriented back half of season one – I’d like to know:

1. Which character would you like to see explored more?

2. What aspect of the show would you like to see exploited more?

3. What aspect of the show would prefer to see minimized?

4. What was your favorite “story moment” from the first half of SGU’s first season?

5. What element (I’m leaving this one wide open) would you like to see added to the series as a whole?

Well, since you asked Joe.

1. The girls on the show is the obvious answer. They’ve had a hard time getting revved up. It’s time for the space chicks to kick a little ass. If you’re going to showcase the space racks, you need to let the girls lock and load some too. Balance is everything.

2. People walk around on the Destiny like it’s their junior high school. The ship is ancient! It’s dark and echoey. There’s gotta be creatures someplace. I want to see long views down corridors where the end is in darkness, except, you can kinda see, something , slinking low at the edge of the light, something…that’s probably my imagination. Probably.

3. The Earth stuff. This is Sci-Fi. I know the stones thing is supposed to help with character development but it’s not helping the show in general. This is a castaways show. It’s about isolation, loneliness and hopefully, paranoia. I want to see desperation and despair. Letting people go home every week to see Mom almost lets all that air out of the balloon.

4. Rush getting left on the planet was epic. It was awesome. Gives me a lot of hope the arc of the show is heading in the correct direction. To infinity…and beyond!

5. We need more scary. We need more exploration of the ship. Space 1999 this thing. Eerie it up. Show us glimpses of mysterious happenings on the ship. Scenes of old battles, desiccated alien corpses, untranslatable messages scrawled in alien blood. We need mystery.

That’s it for now kids. Stargate Universe starts up again in April.

You have hit on most of the things I didn’t like about the show. My order of things to fix would be:
    1. Lose the stupid stones. I don’t want any more earth soap opera.
    2. Stop by the planet Kodachrome and buy some bright paint!!! The story and ship are dingy, it’s depressing to watch. Maybe the ship is how a real ship would look, but at least have the crew paint the main areas of the ship that we see the most. It would be a good work project.
    3. Rush was a jerk, but I wanted someone to punch him out, not abandon him (although that was pretty cool)
4 . Definately up the babe factor. Definately.
    5. How about giving someone some personality? That is why SG was so good, there were interesting characters and there was humor. Maybe they could kill two birds with one stone(s). Have someone discover a way to use the stones to actually sorta beam the entire individual off the ship, back to earth, and replace most of the cast/crew. Make it so the stones have to swap one body for another, get some visitors on the shio, and then ooops the stones get dropped and they break.
    5. Exploring the ship is an excellent idea. It’s huge so lots could be done with this.
    6. Stop by some planets that are inhabited for some R&R

Well, to start they could blow the ship up with everyone on it.LOL Okay I’ll be constructive. Pick a direction and go there, stop trying to be all things to all genres. I am not a BG fan, but the show has its own style and substance and while it is not my cup of tea I can understand the appeal. There are four good characters: Rush, Young, Eli and the ship. The show could be saved but my finger is darn close to the destruct button.

My comments as posted to the blog.

    1. Which character would you like to see explored more?

The main ones. I mean settle on a main cast and actually use them.

    2. What aspect of the show would you like to see exploited more?

The actual science fiction part. The Ship and Alien Worlds part. Break the stones and forget Earth exists in the show except as a plot device of where they are trying to get back to.

    3. What aspect of the show would prefer to see minimized?

The Soap Opera part. I watch scifi for scifi. Throttle back the crappy junior high puberty junk that is being passed off as character development. Show someone on the cast making the hard decisions and actually becoming a hardened leader. I have actually been around real officers who actually make the hard calls in real life. And the personalities you have them portraying are so bad they can’t even be called laughable. If you wish to base this show on character development and inter-personal interaction instead of scifi, action and adventure, that is you call. But at least leave Follywood and go out and meet a few people that actually embody the characteristics you are attempting to portray.

    4. What was your favorite “story moment” from the first half of SGU’s first season?

Hmmmm…. I can’t remember. I think there was one, but it had been driven from my memory by the constant drumbeat of adolescent touchy-feely drivel….

    5. What element (I’m leaving this one wide open) would you like to see added to the series as a whole?

That is easy. SCIENCE FICTION related ADVENTURE with at least one believable character! Just because it takes place on an alien ship doesn’t make it scifi. The movie Titanic took place there but had nothing to do with the ship. They could have made the setting a train or a hotel and told the exact same story.

Overall ditch all the Earth side stories and hire at least one writer that has looked up Science Fiction in the dictionary and transform the show from a soap opera into an actual Science Fiction series.

Feel free to delete or flame. But you ask for opinions……

I want Rush back … he was the only one that i liked – the others just piss me off with their behavior . I want more exploring … some cool aliens and some answers about how will they go back . The stones just make this look like some latino soap opera . Another thing is that there is no action , no enemy , no allies not nothing – i can’t even imagine how the story will unfold

    • iceman

Like ILazov said there is no action, no enemy, no allies no nothing – I can’t even imagine how the story will unfold-most boring scifi show-you really hit the rock bottom.

Best way to save the Stargate television franchise? Bring back Stargate Atlantis! Or even Stargate SG-1.

Send Stargate Universe back to the recent Battlestar Gallactica people where it belongs. Or to network TV’s daily soap opera offerings.

    1. Which character would you like to see explored more?

All the main characters, maybe add one alien. SG franchise should have at least one alien in their main crew.

    2. What aspect of the show would you like to see exploited more?

    Rush scheming!

    3. What aspect of the show would prefer to see minimized?

Stones, just lose them. Stones are the worst part of the show!

    4. What was your favorite “story moment” from the first half of SGU’s first season?

When Young was wandering if Rush know that they are going to survive when ship went to recharge the batteries.

    5. What element (I’m leaving this one wide open) would you like to see added to the series as a whole?

    More exploring of the ship.

Rush is by far my favourite character but I live in constant fear that he is going to end up being a 2-dimensional Doctor Smith-like saboteur. At the moment (being stranded on an alien planet not-withstanding), his humanity and intellect is being subsumed by his ruthless private agendas. Mind you it was a nice touch to see Colonel Young display some unseemly ruthlessness. Eli is wasted. He could mature a bit and have his considerable intellect exploited. Greer is developing in interesting ways, and Camile has intriguing potential. But why so serious. Real-life is never devoid of humour. A little levity and cameraderie would make it less dour. Even O’Neal bears no resemblance to himself.

The stones/Earth thing doesn’t bother me except that it has been over-used and is negating the drive towards better plotting and story-telling. It has served its purpose in the cause of character development.

I’d love to see more science fiction. At present the whole cast seem to be adrift in a completely depopulated universe, except for the thirsty sand things. Don’t get me wrong though, this is far better than encounters with malevolent humanoids in battle armour. We need more of the unexpected and inexplicable. We need more wonder. That’s what science fiction is about. Some great hard sci-fi minds working on scripts would help. There’s got to be more to that ship…? The stargates are wonders of quantum mechanics. Let’s see more reality shifts and technology/quantum puzzles for the genuises to solve.

    1. Which character would you like to see explored more?
All of the main characters. Unlike the other Stargate shows, which were moderately amusing but kind of cheesy and adolescent, the characters here are actually pretty good, and have been tastefully developed – perhaps too much for the infantile tendencies of many sci-fi fans.
    2. What aspect of the show would you like to see exploited more?
Congratulations on being a more subtle and mature show, great! More hard-core science ideas explored, and by that I mean hard science, and not just techno babble. I also like seeing the highly complex characterizations, and the flawed and somewhat morally ambiguous characters. Rush is a great character.
    3. What aspect of the show would prefer to see minimized? The stones. Please no cheesy aliens – if you encounter aliens, make them be like the first alien movie, or something very serious, thrilling and disturbing. No star trek, stargate people with rubber faces, so lame.
    4. What was your favorite “story moment” from the first half of SGU’s first season?
Rush getting left behind. The way the time travel episode ended, very well handled.
    5. What element (I’m leaving this one wide open) would you like to see added to the series as a whole? More exploring of the ship.

  • Joel

    1. Which character would you like to see explored more?
Most of the Characters are pretty solid although many of them lack purpose. Rush is the only character who has developed a true personality. So far none of them have shown much ambition for anything. Since they have the stones and the ship pretty much has given them EVERYTHING they have needed with little work, no one has any drive to go home or to discover anything new. That was what made previous SG’s worth watching was that the characters wanted to explore and be a part of that great beyond that was now reachable thanks to the Stargate. It’s a big ship, there’s got to be more cool stuff than what they have already found, which isn’t much.
    2. What aspect of the show would you like to see exploited more?
Off world action made the SG teams fun to watch. Ancient technology discovery and understanding was what made Carter and McKay fun to watch. Where is the punchy dialogue? I like the darker image for the most part but this series has really strayed away from the exploration and character that made Stargate so interesting.
    3. What aspect of the show would prefer to see minimized?
Less communication via the stones, I mean don’t those things have some kind of power limit or something. For crying out loud people want to see what’s going on beyond earth. If we wanted to see a bad drama where everyone is a whiny brat we would just watch anything on the CW network. And what is up with the home movies and the junior high infatuations? Have the crew send each other notes asking if they like each other and move on already. I would think that Eli would be more intrigued by the multi-puzzle like atmosphere of the Destiny rather than chasing down a chick, which is why he was there in the first place, was it not?
    4. What was your favorite “story moment” from the first half of SGU’s first season?
Rush gets stranded? Nice. Next to an alien craft? Oh baby. Does he use that craft to get back to destiny, or does he finally have the opportunity to study ancient tech without the hindrance of conscience?
    5. What element (I’m leaving this one wide open) would you like to see added to the series as a whole?
Form a standard SG Team- Scott, Johansen, Greer, and Eli maybe. Is there possibly a race that is as old to the ancients as the ancients are to humans? Did they approve or disapprove of the progression of the Avalonians and the Ori and did they interfere? Just a thought.

Id like to see Rush character get more credit i mean everyone seems to hate him which is justly known why. But still he should become alittle more ramboish with his return to destiny. Also i think they should use the devices from sg1 episode foothold so when the people use the stones they can atleast use the chips so we can see more destiny to earth development.
