Speed Racer to Run from Aliens in Darkest Hour

The Timur Bekmambetov-produced and Russian-set alien invasion actioner “Darkest Hour” is about to get faster — or speedier, if you will. Emile Hirsch, star of the Wachowski’s epic fail that was the “Speed Racer” live action movie, has joined the film’s cast.

Hirsch joins Olivia Thirlby, who recently signed on as one of a group of American tourists trapped in Moscow, Russia during the alien invasion. Hirsch will probably play another member of the tourist brood, unless he plans to paste on a Russian accent.

Budgeted at around $40 million, “Darkest Hour” will be directed by Chris Gorak (“Right at Your Door”) from a script by Les Bohem and Jon Spaihts. It will be shot on location on Russia. Bekmambetov, who is becoming quite the prolific producer of genre movies, is producing alongside Tom Jacobson.
