I would love to see the robotech series done. From Macross through to the invid invasion and the sentinels. However the first dose need to be done right. An idea is to start with the crash landing of the sdf 1 as the movie opening and then build up with the charaters a bit at the start. Build up the pressure of the opening battle so the sdf crew have no choice but to make the fold jump in atmosphere above macross island. Following the plot similar to the cartoon would not be to hard through this. Just intensify it a bit. Then the climax is the ill fated jump out to pluto with macross island in tow. End the movie there. Dramatic ending achieved with no one knowing the fate of the islands inhabitents and sdf millions of miles from earth unable to protect our own planet if its attacked. If good actors are invovled this kind of ending would be a sure fire way of sparking a great interest in the series. The tension at the end of the movie would be enormous as the crew of the sdf would be under pressure because of all the civilians trapped in shelters on macross island that they need to rescue and finding a way back to earth without the fold drive. Lets face it, if the zentradi didnt follow the the sdf in the cartoons earth would have been screwed as the sdf was our flagship and even then i was outgunned buy the vast amount of ships the zentradi had. Just a rough idea of a possible plot for an opening movie. I've been thinking about writing a full version but studies and work keep me a bit busy. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Is Robotech going the same was as the StarBlazers movie when Disney bought the rights in the 1990's????

What made this series special was it combined a very human story with an understanding of science and science fiction concepts. Without this understanding we get a pile of nonsense such as the last Star Trek movie in which the director obviously had not even the slightest idea of what he was doing, as apposed to the TV series which was rock solid. My fear is a live-action Robotech movie will be a license to film just another teenage romance story, dumbed down as to not scare off the masses. Give us a break. If you can't be true to your source material then just forget it!

Rick Hunter was a square jawed stubborn pilot. Young but brilliant. McQuire is not the right person for this. Personally, he rocked as Spider-man but sucked as peter Parker.

I am and have been a Robotech fan since it's release in the U.S., and I am certain if they hire people that want to make this film just because it would be a cool thing to do and to make some quick cash, then it will fail. This animation, the English version is so in depth with the story, it's characters, music, veritechs, etc.. that any thing left out would probably be a mistake. I am in my mid-thirties and have chosen to go back and finish film school. I have decided to go back because I am sick and tired of Hollywood trying to reproduce a classic only to make a quick buck. As far as this movie goes, I believe it should be made into a 5 part movie. Yes, about 10 hours should be sufficient for the Macross series. Of course they have to get the first one right, and I do not think it will happen. But that's o.k. because maybe I can get my shot at this movie sometime after I graduate. Wish me luck!

They better not mess this up or I'll be pissed. Robotech was a phenomenon. It was my first exposure to television with consequences (i.e. characters who live, die, suffer and benefit) and a throughline (i.e. an evolving storyline, rather than 22 minutes of meaningless struggle leaving everyone in the place they started from).

@kristopherbishop - a G rating might draw in the kids, but the level of violence necessary to make a decent live action version of Robotech would pretty much preclude anything less than a PG-13. They (the producers) are better off going after a) teenagers and b) people like me who are now in their early 30s, grew up with Robotech, and would never in a million years spend $10 to see kiddie fare.

The big question is, who the hell are they going to cast?

While Robotech is just a remake of the original Macross, I still love it to death. I grew up on this show back during the days of Toonami. Tobi, please do this right. I would hate to have one of my favorite shows ruined. We will see though

Just do not change the music and innocent dialog. Upgrading is nice, but familiarity and G-rated access is better for this project. Who needs blue humor when you have aliens and reverse-engineered robotic technology. Granted, much info is hard to place in a live-action rendition, so newcomers can understand and enjoy. I say, make them watch Robotech, the original, and deal with it! LOL!
