Smallville Creators Writing Robotech Movie
It looks like Tobey Maguire’s “Robotech” live-action movie is still moving forward, this time there’s news that the project has nabbed its writers — Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the creators of the WB’s Smallville TV show, which followed the adventures of a pre-Superman Clark Kent. The duo recently just bailed from the aging TV show (seriously, how long is Clark Kent going to keep pretending to be a teenager? Isn’t the actor playing him like 30 or something by now?), and recently contributed to the most recent “Mummy” film, as well as Maguire’s “Spider-Man 2″. So yeah, they know how to write superheroes is what I’m trying to say.
From THR:
A sprawling sci-fi epic, “Robotech” takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots.
Lawrence Kasdan wrote a previous draft. Warners is intent on keeping the project moving forward, and Gough and Millar bring action and geek cred to the table.
If this thing ever gets made, man, it’ll be pretty damn big. Can you imagine seeing those giant robots flying around, transforming in the middle of battle? I guess the success of “Transformers” has proven that giant robots aren’t just doable on the big screen, they’re profitable, too.
Akiva Goldsman and Chuck Roven are producing with Tobey Maguire and Drew Crevello for Warner Bros.
