Smallville Creators Writing Robotech Movie

Robotech (Live-Action) Movie, Sci-Fi Movie News — By Nix on November 17, 2008 |

It looks like Tobey Maguire’s “Robotech” live-action movie is still moving forward, this time there’s news that the project has nabbed its writers — Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the creators of the WB’s Smallville TV show, which followed the adventures of a pre-Superman Clark Kent. The duo recently just bailed from the aging TV show (seriously, how long is Clark Kent going to keep pretending to be a teenager? Isn’t the actor playing him like 30 or something by now?), and recently contributed to the most recent “Mummy” film, as well as Maguire’s “Spider-Man 2″. So yeah, they know how to write superheroes is what I’m trying to say.

From THR:

A sprawling sci-fi epic, “Robotech” takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots.

Lawrence Kasdan wrote a previous draft. Warners is intent on keeping the project moving forward, and Gough and Millar bring action and geek cred to the table.

If this thing ever gets made, man, it’ll be pretty damn big. Can you imagine seeing those giant robots flying around, transforming in the middle of battle? I guess the success of “Transformers” has proven that giant robots aren’t just doable on the big screen, they’re profitable, too.

Akiva Goldsman and Chuck Roven are producing with Tobey Maguire and Drew Crevello for Warner Bros.

Seriously, please do not screw this one up. Robotech Macross saga has everything you need to make a good movie – okay more like 10 good movies. Roy, Max, Rick, Lisa, Cladia, Miriya, Gloval, Breetai – just to name a few, are so well loved and defined characters. You even love the bad guys in this! Throw in some ars kicking robots and how could things get any better. Hell the story arch is even there. You just need some good directing and script writers to make some updates to the cinemataography and dialogues.

There comes a time when egos need to be left at the door more than ever. My fairly narrow view on who needs to be cast in what role doesn't need to be spelled out here. Everyone associated with the characters of the original series has their own ideas on who best would fill these roles. The one common comment I do hear is that Toby Maguire is NOT the right person to fit into any of the leading characters.
My son (age 31) and I have many discussions about this subject. We both arose early Saturday mornings just to watch this series. Granted, japanese animation was something new to the general american population but the story lines were above and beyond anything available to the aforementioned.
It is amazing to me just how much information and originality my son brings to this discussion and I would hope the producers and writers would search out those types of people to seriously use that information and imagination when molding this project.
To do the opposite and ignore such important input will DESTROY this genre all for the inability to release ones ego. (You can see what that does to a story in the latest Transformers movie).

Just do not change the music and innocent dialog. Upgrading is nice, but familiarity and G-rated access is better for this project. Who needs blue humor when you have aliens and reverse-engineered robotic technology. Granted, much info is hard to place in a live-action rendition, so newcomers can understand and enjoy. I say, make them watch Robotech, the original, and deal with it! LOL!
