Welcome to the second edition of Cinema Obscura. Today we will be taking a look at an oldie but goodie called Brainstorm (1983), starring Christopher Walken.
The Basics
A group of scientists develop a device they dub ‘The Hat’ which is a headset that transmits the brain’s activity directly to a computer and allows these recordings to be experienced by other people. The success of this scientific project leads to plenty of intrigue involving the military, and the subject of death is prominently featured. This was Natalie Wood’s final film.
The Review
Despite suffering from being oftentimes painfully dated due to some of the technology used, the ideas and concepts explored in this movie are well represented due to the strength of the cast. Directed by Douglas Trumbull and starring Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood, Brainstorm is as much a story about the human experience as it is a science fiction thriller. The chemistry between Walken and Wood helps the audience to invest in these characters on an emotional level, and the plot moves along well enough and provides many moments that encourage the viewer to ponder the themes throughout. Special effects wise Brainstorm is a bit inconsistent, but nothing too terrible really. Just remember that it has a low budget and it was made in the 80’s and you might just be impressed with much of the visual candy on offer. This is a deep film and requires several viewings, but all in all quite enjoyable.
