Sci-Fi Cinema Obscura will be your weekly guide to science fiction goodness that you likely have not heard of. This week we take a look at a film from Korea called 2009 Lost Memories (2002).
The Basics
Far into the future in the year 2009, Korea has become part of the Japanese empire due to an event in the past that was altered. The story centers on two special agents of the JBI who attempt to crack down on pro-Korean nationalists who’ve been plotting to bring down the Japanese regime in their country. They intend to do this by attempting to go back to the moment in history which changed it’s natural course.
The Review
Decent film with a decent enough plot and some nice action sequences. There were a few instances where the special effects just looked bad but that is usually expected from smaller budget fare. The cinematography is however gorgeous and this is really typical of most films from South Korea. The action was good, lots of Matrix-like slo-mo, plenty of shooting and exploding too. The pacing is reasonable and ensures that the suspense is maintained throughout. By no means high art, this is still a good watch when you’re alone on a Friday night and have had enough of World of Warcraft. Check it out.
