Robin and The Graysons Coming to the WB
Yikes. As if dragging Superman’s origins out for the last eight years wasn’t bad enough, the WB is now prepping a TV series based on the early life and times of Robin The Boy Wonder, aka Batman’s sidekick. But wait, it won’t be like any Robin you’ve seen before (which goes without saying, right? This thing is on the WB, after all), and the first hint that this Robin will be a barely recognizable shell of his comic book self is the name: yes, they’ve given Dick Grayson a nickname. DJ. Dick Grayon will now be known as “DJ” to his buddies. I shit you not. But then again, from the network that gave us a reboot of Beverly Hills 90210, Gossip Girl, and a relentless army of crappy teen melodramas as envisioned by 40-year old men, I guess we shouldn’t be too surprise.
More on this fantastically, sure-to-be crappy show from Variety:
Just as “Smallville” focused on Clark Kent in the years before he became Superman, “The Graysons” will follow the world of Dick “DJ” Grayson before he takes on the iconic Robin identity and aligns himself with Batman.
“The Graysons” is seen as a potential replacement for “Smallville” should that show end its run this season, which has been speculated. Should “Smallville” return next year, “The Graysons” might also make a strong companion piece.
In the one-hour “Graysons,” which will be set in modern times, young DJ will face challenges involving first loves, young rivals and his family as he grows up. Souders and Peterson have come up with an original take on the character.
Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson, who took over producing chores on Smallville after original producers (and much, much smarter guys) Miles Millar and Al Gough ditched the aging show for better pastures, will produce The Graysons for the WB. McG (The Sarah Connor Chronicles, the “Charlie’s Angels” movies) will also produce.
For a better look at what a revamp Robin could be, check out Frank Miller and Jim Lee’s new take on Batman, “All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder”, where Robin nearly kills Green Lantern by karate chopping him in the neck. I kid you not.
