According to Robert Rodriguez, who co-wrote and produced “Predators”, thanks to the box office success of the film, it’s looking very “likely” that the studio will greenlight a sequel. Rodriguez tells IGN:
[The studio] said, ‘Let’s do some other ones. What other story ideas do you have?’ Because it was like, let’s test out the market with this one. They really wanted it to be pretty contained, pretty scaled-back. They didn’t want to put too many of the ideas into it that we could save for a second one. So we could see what the appetite was, because the bigger movie would actually be what comes following that. That kind of sets up a new storyline, new location and world, and then you can really go crazy from there.
As with the first one, Rodriguez will probably not direct.
“Predators” was made for $40 million (a modest budget by Hollywood standards), and has grossed $80 million so far at the worldwide box office. Half of that amount is from domestic ticket sales, though the film seems to have petered out already in only its second week. The film has only just begun opening overseas, though, so it should add to its total by the time it’s through.
And of course, there are DVD sales, the main income of most action movies anyway…
