Pentagon Propellerheads Take First Steps Toward Morphing Robotic Killers

Sci-Fi Science News, Sci-Fi Tech — By endymi0n on June 9, 2009

Researchers funded by mega science fund DARPA or the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency are slowly and incredably making progress on a Robert Patrick style metal morphing Terminator. From Signal magazine via Wired.

Some incriminating quotes.

“morphing aircraft and ground vehicles, uniforms that can alter themselves to be comfortable in any climate, and ’soft’ robots that flow like mercury through small openings to enter caves and bunker complexes.” A soldier could even reach into a can of unformed goop, and order up a custom-made tool or a “universal spare part.”

There’s no such thing as a soft robot. Other advances from other labs funded by DARPA include,

“self-folding origami” that “use specialized sheets of material with built-in actuators and data. These machines use cutting-edge mathematical theorems to fold themselves into virtually any three-dimensional object.”

Like a bazooka. Does this sound like “robots in disguise” to anyone else but me? Watch your machines carefully friends.
