Neal Moritz, producer of “Fast Five”, has handed out writing assignments to the writing duo of Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (“X-Men: First Class”) to knock out a script for a remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 movie “Starship Troopers” for him, according to Vulture.

Who doesn’t remember “Starship Troopers”? The big-budget Hollywood studio adaptation of Robert Heinlein’s novel of the same name, starring Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, and an incredibly goofy, awful Denise Richards? The film showed off Verhoeven’s craft at its best — sly, satirical, action-packed, and more often than not, incredibly questionable in terms of taste.

The original spawn two low-budget sequels that went direct-to-DVD, along with an ongoing animated TV show that, from what I can recall, lasted a couple of seasons. There is also a four film, “Starship Troopers: Invasion” due out in 2012, but who knows if that will ever get released.

Of course, it remains to be seen if the remake will hold onto the in-your-face satire of the original, or if they’ll even bother. You would think they have to, right? Otherwise, what would be the point? Then again, alien invasion movies are incredibly in vogue nowadays…
