Without the ship environments, they wouldn't have to build too many complex sets. And given the ending of the movie, maybe continue the franchise a few hours/days/weeks later... Great pulse pounding horror actioner, but low on the cerebral stuff. Great ending too. There was early talk of sequel/prequel, but with box-office returns being sort of low in the States I don't see that happening anymore. Agreed.
