Outlander DVD Specs and Cover Art

Outlander (2008) Movie, Sci-Fi DVD News — By Nix on March 13, 2009 |

James Caviezel’s “Outlander” didn’t really get a whole lot of respect when it was released in a limited number of theaters earlier this year, but for my money, it was a pretty decent re-interpretation of the Beowulf legend. Okay, so adding the whole spaceman component made it more than a “re-interpretation”, but if you happen to dig the whole Beowulf stuff and sci-fi at the same time, how could you go wrong?

In a story described by reviewers as Beowulf meets Predator, a spacecraft crash-lands in ancient Norway, bringing with it a bloodthirsty alien beast. As the creature ravages the Viking world, one soldier, the only surviving member of his clan, attempts to form an alliance with two warring Viking tribes, combining advanced technology with Iron Age weaponry to hunt the beast before it can destroy them all.

If you missed the film when it was finally put out in limited release after a long delay, I would recommend catching it on DVD. It’s a good, entertaining film that puts a new spin on an old story. The DVD arrives on shelves May 19th from The Weinstein Company and Genius Products.

The film starred Jim Caviezel, Sophia Myles, Jack Huston, Ron Perlman, and John Hurt. Howard McCain directed.
