Neill Blomkamp Preps his Next Sci-Fi Movie…

District 9 Sequel, Neill Blomkamp Untitled Sci-Fi Movie, Sci-Fi Movie News — By Nix on October 23, 2009

…and it doesn’t sound like it’s going to be a sequel to his breakout hit “District 9″. Variety currently has an article on Blomkamp getting a solid commitment from Media Rights Capital to begin work on his next movie, an untitled sci-fi film. If this was a sequel to “District 9″, they would probably have mentioned that up front, but they didn’t.

“MRC is letting me make the film I want to make, and that is by far the most important thing here,” Blomkamp told Daily Variety. “The film will hopefully be commercial, but it is very much a singular film, (one) that comes directly from me.”

South African Blomkamp’s follow-up to his surprise hit “District 9″, which was made for $30 million and grossed $184 million worldwide, will cost significant more than his first movie, which was produced by Peter Jackson. No word of Peter Jackson’s involvement in this one.

Again, no mention if this is going to be a “District 9″ sequel. If this was a sequel, you would think they would be trumpeting it, given the success of the first movie. Which leads me to believe this is NOT a sequel to “District 9″. Of course, I could be wrong.

Update:

In another Variety article, Blomkamp all but confirms this is not a “District 9″ sequel, saying:

“I’m not particularly interested in massive budget films, or creating huge spectacles that some young directors might be attracted to,” he said. “Hopefully, this will be a bit unique, very much a reflection of me. It is absolutely another science fiction film, quite different from `District 9,’ but some of the blending of genres and the tone might be within the same realm.”

I guess you guys will just have to wait for “District 10″. Blomkamp also confirms that Jackson will not produce this movie.

So what, no District 9 sequel? Just like that? Uh, you suck, Neill.
