Microsoft Sorta Debunks Spielberg-Halo Movie Rumor

Halo Movie, Sci-Fi Movie News — By Nix on August 13, 2009

You know, I’ve played the Halo game before, and I don’t get why it’s so popular. It looked and felt like a generic sci-fi-themed first-person shooter to me, except you can drive a dune buggy around blasting enemies. Other than that, I really don’t see anything special about it, or why people are clamoring for a movie version. That said, Microsoft has now responded to rumors of Steven Spielberg possibly coming onboard to produce the long-stalled “Halo” movie.

Via Kotaku, a Microsoft spokesman said this in regards to the Spielberg-Halo rumors:

We’re glad there’s still a lot of enthusiasm in the entertainment industry surrounding the idea of a Halo movie. That said, the Halo feature film remains on hold as we focus on projects like Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach.

They added … “nothing further to share with respect to plans regarding a Halo movie”. It sounds like they didn’t really debunk the rumor, but they didn’t confirm it either. Methinks this means Spielberg may actually be considering it, and that talks may actually be going on in the background.

As you may or may not recall, a “Halo” movie was this close to getting made a few years ago with Peter Jackson attached to produce, and “District 9″ director Neill Blomkamp scheduled to make his feature-film debut on the project. But the movie fell through, and Jackson and Blomkamp went on to do “District 9″ instead.

Hey, did you hear? Spielberg might direct our movie. Sha-weet!

Maybe people like Halo as it's not a bad game at all. Maybe you could always delve deeper and read the books that fill in the blanks and make the games better but then again, it's easier to be negative.

Oh well, another web page that dislikes.

Yeah, I apologize for having a life. Next time I'll make sure to read the comic books, the novels, and all the fan fiction out there on every single videogame-turned-movie in existence. That'll show you!

BTW It amazes me how you fanboys always manage to turn a comment about how I don't “get” the popularity of the game (or a movie, etc) into me “disliking” it. Good grief.

Even thought the actual gameplay is a standard 1st person shooter, the story is what’s so captivating. You take on the persona of a bad-ass marine, beat up aliens, save the world, yada yada. But you do so as a hero that everyone still holds on to the image of. Someone risking and possibly sacrificing they’re life to do what’s right. We don’t really find that much in real life these days. But that’s why they chose Master Chief to be a marine. The Armed Forces are some of the heroes that are personified here. I personally believe that News and Mass Media don’t focus on that much cause it might not up there ratings but it’s still what people want to see. And sometimes be.
