You know, I’ve played the Halo game before, and I don’t get why it’s so popular. It looked and felt like a generic sci-fi-themed first-person shooter to me, except you can drive a dune buggy around blasting enemies. Other than that, I really don’t see anything special about it, or why people are clamoring for a movie version. That said, Microsoft has now responded to rumors of Steven Spielberg possibly coming onboard to produce the long-stalled “Halo” movie.

Via Kotaku, a Microsoft spokesman said this in regards to the Spielberg-Halo rumors:

We’re glad there’s still a lot of enthusiasm in the entertainment industry surrounding the idea of a Halo movie. That said, the Halo feature film remains on hold as we focus on projects like Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach.

They added … “nothing further to share with respect to plans regarding a Halo movie”. It sounds like they didn’t really debunk the rumor, but they didn’t confirm it either. Methinks this means Spielberg may actually be considering it, and that talks may actually be going on in the background.

As you may or may not recall, a “Halo” movie was this close to getting made a few years ago with Peter Jackson attached to produce, and “District 9″ director Neill Blomkamp scheduled to make his feature-film debut on the project. But the movie fell through, and Jackson and Blomkamp went on to do “District 9″ instead.

Hey, did you hear? Spielberg might direct our movie. Sha-weet!
