Kenneth Johnson Wins Arbitration Against ABC for V Credits

After seeing the V pilot at Comic-Con, I’ve been looking forward to the show ever since, but man, I’m really not liking how ABC and their parent company Warner Bros. is trying to screw over original creator Kenneth Johnson in regards to properly crediting him on the show. WTF, ABC? Stop being dicks.

The hullabaloo has been chronicled over at Airlock Alpha, but here’s the down and dirty:

ABC and the WB are trying to maintain that their new V show is so different from the one Kenneth Johnson created in the ’80s, that they aren’t required to properly credit him on the show. As in, they don’t want to acknowledge Johnson in the show’s credits at all. Which is pure bull crap. Fortunately, the Writer’s Guild of America has done the right thing and ruled in favor of Johnson, concluding that the new show is indeed a remake of Johnson’s original V, and he will be properly credited as its creator on every episode.

You know, I don’t even understand how this could be an issue. Who is the idiot at ABC who thought he could get away with this? Moron.

But I think it’s important to recognize that this conflict is with Kenneth Johnson and the network, and that, in all likelihood, the current creative team on V (led by The 4400’s Scott Peters) had no say in the matter. (Unless I’m wrong, which I could be, but I don’t think I am.) So yes, I’m still looking forward to the show, but it sure has left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I hope they give Johnson his due in the opening credits, and not try to hide it in the back of every episode.

In any case, along with winning the arbitration, Johnson also reiterates his plans to create a series of new “V” major motion pictures based on his own ideas. Could it be? A V on TV, and a V franchise on the big screen? Only in my dreams, baby.

Diane would never have approved of what ABC tried to pull, the scumbags.
