Big news out of the world of Rumorland today, as Firstshowing.net is reporting a rumor that Keanu Reeves has been attached to play the lead character Spike in the just-revealed “Cowboy Bebop” live-action movie. The site wouldn’t say who their source is, but that he’s close to the production. What’s more, the source also gives the stunner that Reeves has been attached to the project for as long as eight months now. Wow. Didn’t we just hear about this movie last week?

More from FirstShowing:

Yep, you heard that right, the same guy who played Neo will be taking on the role of Spike Spiegel, a former member of the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate who is haunted by the memory of his time in the organization. As we mentioned previously, the show first aired in Japan in early 1998 and was brought over to America in 2001 on Adult Swim. The series follows the adventures of a group of bounty hunters traveling on their spaceship, the Bebop, in the year 2071. If you’re looking for more details regarding this live-action Cowboy Bebop movie, here’s yet another juicy tidbit. With Keanu Reeves involved, it’s obvious this is no small project. My source also told me that if everything stays the same, the budget on this will be insane.

Well it would have to be “insane”, wouldn’t it? Any sci-fi movie already means big budget, but add a big name like Reeves, and the budget will probably only get bigger. As much as I dismiss Reeves as an actor, the guy is a major draw, and studios know that.

So fans of “Cowboy Bebop”, if Reeves does end up starring in the movie, you can expect Hollywood to throw everything including the kitchen sink at this thing. Whether that is good news or bad news is entirely up to you.

Yes, Hollywood will throw everything at this movie. The fans however, will throw everything at the production company. And of course in the end lay people won’t see it, and of course they’ve alienated the fan base by putting a crap actor in the role.

Keanu is underated and i think they should get a really Great Director for this and a good script and focus on some action if they can land some other big time actors because Keanu needs another star and he can bring in the fans …

Its all rep in the biz , most people follow the leader and the rest of the sheep it really is a which hunt at this point because Keanu is a wonderful actor the work stands out early on he leanrned on the job but now is top notch , it’s all rep and thats apart of him like Richard gere and the gerbal. Even critic Gene Sieskel before he past said good things about Keanu’s work to me love or hate him you can’t imagine the roles he has played without him

    ANIME TO HOLLYWOOD MOVIES.

We have Speed Racer,Dragonball and now Cowboy Bebop going to the big screen by Fox there is a live action Akira movie happening and Ninja Scroll.
Keanu Reeves is not that type of person playing these anime characters in the fiilm.
There is other news that Dreamworks will work on Ghost in The Shell and Threshold Entertainment (Mortal Kombat movies) producing the Ninja Scroll feature film with special effects and fight scenes.
    Thank You.

Of all the people to pick for Spike why Keanu? Honestly…. I think he is a horrible actor. The only movie he did that was a good role for him was Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Not that I can think of anyone better to play Spike… Keanu just doesn’t have it to be him. They just better pick good actors for Faye and Ed. Otherwise… I think I would officially have to say I wont go and watch it. Probably will anyways though. lmao :)

I could go on all day about how Reeves isn’t nearly as badass as Spike and how this is going to be a repeat of that shitfest Transformers, but the fact of the matter is that Spike Spiegel was 27! SO it should at stand to reason that they’re hiring an actor who is twice as old as the character he’s playing. Why is hollywood full of such retards?

While I personally believe Reeves to be a 2nd rate actor, his role of John Constantine in Constantine reminded me in an uncanny way of Nicholas D. Wolfwood. Wolfwood, in turn reminds me of Spike Spiegel. So I think that Reeves is capable of pulling off Spike, but he could also totally screw it up.
