Joss Whedon Says There is Hope for Dollhouse
Dollhouse TV Series, Sci-Fi TV News — By Nix on April 17, 2009
Joss Whedon wants you to know that there is a chance FOX won’t reach into his chest, pull out his heart, throw it to the ground, and stomp on it the way they did his ill-fated Firefly TV show. We’re talking about Dollhouse, of course, Whedon’s Eliza Dushku-starring action-adventure show which has Dushku playing an “active” who has her memory wiped and imprinted with a new personality every week in order to service rich men. Yeah, it’s basically every geek’s fantasy come true on a weekly basis, so what’s not to like about it? Apparently lots, because ratings for the show have been hard to come by.
Then again, it’s not as if FOX has really given the show a chance. Earlier this week at PaleyFest, which is some sort of TV shindig or some such, Whedon talked about the chances of his Dollhouse actually finishing up its first season and coming back for a second.
Via THR:
“They’re waiting to see what happens,” he said, adding Fox has said the “numbers have been solid and the demographic is wonderful and the DVR ratings have been great.”
“So right now I’ve gone from a sort of place of ‘You don’t even care, nobody loves me’ [laughs] to a place of God, I can’t believe I’m saying this … hope.
“We might actually get the chance to do what we’re dying to do, which is tell more of these stories with these crazy people because we have so many more yet to come,” Whedon said of the series in which Eliza Dushku (“Buffy”) plays an “active” whose memory is wiped and replaced to suit various “engagements.”
“Basically it’s what happens in the next few weeks; we have a new lead-in (replacing ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’), we have a few more episodes coming up — whether it’s 12 or 13 — they are fierce,” he added. “They are ridiculous; I am so proud of them. We’re going to go out this season with a bang, and hopefully we’ll get to come back for Season 2.”
He’s talking about Prison Break, which is also wrapping up its final season. Hopefully the fanbase for Prison Break who will be tuning into the series’ final few episodes will stick around for Dollhouse, and convince FOX that this show should get a real chance. Like, say, airing after one of those American Idol episodes, perhaps? How many American Idol episodes are there a week, like 10? I’m just saying.
