Earlier this year, the Akira movie was moving at a pretty fast clip. Warner Bros. had snapped up the movie rights for Leonardo DiCaprio’s company to produce (and the Titanic star to possibly star), and word soon after was that the suddenly in demand Joseph Gordon Levitt had nabbed the co-starring (and some would say, leading) role of Testuo in the live-action version of the popular manga/anime. And then … nothing. It’s been nearly seven months since we last heard anything about the Akira movie … until now.

MTV recently caught up with Joseph Gordon Levitt, and asked him about Akira the movie:

When asked about the rumor, Levitt responded, “That just goes to show what you can believe about what people write about movies. I love the movie ‘Akira.’ I still have yet to read the manga, but that’s really just a rumor. They don’t have a script or anything.”

Wow. Nearly a year later since the project was announced, and we still don’t have a script? Or solid casting on the movie? I guess they’re going the Watchmen route with this one — that is, it’s gonna take a looooooong time before this thing happens, if it even happens at all.

Oh well. I was never that convinced a live-action version of Akira could be accomplished in a satisfying way, anyway.
