Is Pre-Production For Avatar 2 Already Underway?

Well I would hope so, considering how long it took for James Cameron to make the first one. Of course, there’s a lot of material all ready to yank from the assets of the first extravaganza. There is tons of blue tinted stuff and leafy bio-luminescent alien flora. Mountains somehow defying gravity, check, got that. Toothy alien jungle critters. Plenty of those.

To be honest, although I really loved the first “Avatar”, I’m not really sure how much more story there is to tell. The world setup is pretty simple. I’m assuming the human menace will return and this time bring bigger mechs and nastier, maybe four rotor, helicopters. We’ll have another villain, this time more gruesome and scowling.

Io9 chatted up Robert Stromberg, production designer for “Avatar” and he had this to say.

“We’ve chatted about certain things,” says Stromberg. “I’m going to see Jim [Cameron] next Tuesday. I’m sure we’re going to talk about it.”

Since these guys are always underplaying what’s really going on I’m assuming that there’s a bit more than chatting happening but I could be wrong. Very interested to see what they do with the story. I hope James gives it a bit of stretch.
