Is Josh Brolin Joining the Men in Black?

Fresh of the success of “No Country for Old Men”, Josh Brolin is a wanted man. In Hollywood, that’s a good thing. It’s when no one’s speculating you for a movie role, that’s when you know your career is in trouble. Thanks to that breakthrough part, Brolin has landed leads in the comic book Western “Jonah Hex”, the sequel to “Wall Street”, and has a remake of “True Grit”, also with the Coen Brothers coming up. And if all goes according to plan, he might also play an MIB agent in “Men in Black 3″ for Sony, according to the LATimes.

The word is that Brolin is being “considered” for a part in the surefire hit, where he would either play a replacement for Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones), or join K and J (Will Smith) as a third MIB agent. Since the sci-fi action/comedy series has always worked best as a two-man team, it seems doubtful that the filmmakers would risk messing with the formula by adding a third wheel. More likely, if Brolin does indeed sign on the dotted line, he’ll be replacing either K or J. I have my money on K. You don’t “replace” Will Smith. At least, if you want to make money. Then again, this is the third installment in the series, and they might go the “clever” route by adding a third agent to the mix. Get it? “Men in Black 3″?

Sony is keen on getting the sequel up and running, and you can understand why. The first movie made $589 million in worldwide grosses back in 1997, while the sequel, though lacking the punch of the first, nevertheless did an impressive $441 million. The studio is currently targeting a 2010 start date.

The third chair arrives tomorrow. Maybe.
