Is Defying Gravity Canceled or isn’t it? ABC Answers.

I never really gave Defying Gravity a shot, mostly because the concept of Grey’s Anatomy In Space made me want to barf. I have no use for Grey’s Anatomy, so any offshoot of it, well, ain’t that tempting. Recent rumors have Defying Gravity being canceled after just eight episodes. This, says ABC, is not true.

The Futon Critic has the word from the Alphabet network themselves that the show is not, despite rumors to the contrary, canceled. In fact, it was always the plan to air just the first eight episodes of the show’s first season, which was originally scheduled for 13 episodes.

So when can fans of Defying Gravity (I’m assuming it has fans, right? though frankly, the ratings don’t seem to bear that out) see the remaining five episodes? According to the Futon Critic, ABC is currently mulling its “scheduling options”, which means soon, or later, or possibly never. This wouldn’t be the first time a network decides to shelve unaired episodes of a failing show, even if they’ve already spent the money to make them.

So yeah, Defying Gravity has NOT been canceled. It just, well, ain’t gonna be airing anytime soon. Stay tune, Grey’s Anatomy in Space fans!

Hey, guys, I think I saw a black hole. Oh wait, that's just our second season. Nevermind.

Once again, ABC has you-know-what the pooch. Despite my “vow” to boycott ABC after the triple cancellation of DSM, Eli Stone, and especially, Pushing Daisies, I cheated and checked out -and subsequently loved – “Defying Gravity”. I hate “Grey's Anatomy”, but love SciFi, and in this day and age when NASA rarely gets any coverage of the Space Program (for real), I was hoping for something that conveyed the excitement of space travel, a type of fiction that has been lacking major attention since Star Trek(s) went off the air. I knew I was taking a big chance in trusting ABC to follow through on ANY show, but the concept combined with the cast and creators was too much to pass up. It was a great show! Of course I didn't watch it live – I don't watch anything live anymore (though if Neilson ever wants to make me a “family”, I promise I'll return to yesteryear and watch things all the way through, including commercials!). I knew there was a 95% chance that this would happen, but I hoped. Going forward, why doesn't ABC simply start all new shows with a back-up plan in place to punt them over to another network if they don't live up to ABC's archaic notion that every new show will be as popular as “The Love Boat”? Seriously, give shows a shot on ABC, but at the same time (actually ahead of time), pitch them to USA, SyFy, TNT, upper-tier cable, and (omg!) the other 3 networks (I'm including FOX). This pattern of rolling out good, or at least very promising shows only to ditch them once people start getting into them HAS TO STOP!! Defying Gravity was NOT “Grey's Anatomy in Space” (unless there is a mysterious alien force guiding the docs on G.A. that I'm not aware of…). How about hiring a new marketing division, ABC? And please, wake up and join the future… it's NOW!

I don't live in the US but was able to get my hands Defying Gravity – what a breath of fresh air this show is! There are enough instant gratification sci-fi shows that follow the same predefined tired formulas. This is unique, involved, has a well paced story and character development and definitely should continue! Stargate: Universe seems to be trying for strong story progression and characters but ultimately fails where Defying Gravity succeeds. Keep this going – a big thumbs up!

I just watched / downloaded the final (13th episode), what an excellent show. It is such a great show I would even watch it again on free-to-air tv if it ever came to Australia. But alas it got canceled, just liked Life-On-Mars, Journey-Man, and New-Amsterdam. I have an idea, with sci-fi they should write them as 13 episode one season only (final), so that when the brainless numbers men pull the plug the viewers at least get a full story. At this rate TV is going to only be full of mindless bubble-gum milk-shake (substance less) 15-minutes-of-fame reality tv.
    Sad to see it end.

ABC doesn't give a shit about the fans. This show was only getting more interesting, I can't believe they've stopped it. If it isn't mindless average joe crap then the ratings aren't good? WTF Continue catering to the people that like it and stop only thinking about the money.

Hope that whoever pulled the plug on this show wakes up tomorrow with a pile of shit in they bowl of cereal.

Incredible! I completely agree with you! I truely wish everyone that watches anything on abc would just quite and let them run themseleves into the ground. Seriously it's like the entire network had a stupid attack!
