Independance Day 2 A Non Starter Without Will

Sci-Fi Movie News — By endymi0n on October 13, 2009

independence_day_large_03Not satisfied in his efforts to completely annihilate the planet Earth, the king of destruction, Roland Emmerich, is harking back to his more subtle period where just major cities were the subject of his artistic hand.

In “Independance Day”, Mr. Emmerich broke new ground in the art high speed urban renewal. The film starred Will Smith and it made him the movie star we know today. Roland would like to blow some more stuff up, but not without Will to spearhead the effort. Latino Review recently spoke to Roland during press for “2012″ and says that a script is done but 20th Century Fox can’t quite come to terms with Dean Devlin (producer, writer), Big Will and Roland, or in other words, the money is just not there yet.

Here’s a quote from the interview:

“I said Will is essential for us, for this movie and actually for the audience too. And, so, it’s in limbo and lately the studios are fighting. Like gross players, and Will is a gross player and is probably the only gross player right now who’s worth his gross. So we’ll see what happens. I would love to do it,”

So Will is a gross player. I guess that means he’s important. Thanks Cinematical for the scoop.

There's a huge opportunity for a sequel to show the aftermath of what happened and take it in a character-driven direction. I don't see how there would be much left to blow up.

I'd like to see a District 9-type scenario except where the surviving humans and surviving aliens get along and work together to build a new society.
