Workaholic Peter Jackson is apparently ratcheting away on his latest project down there in New Zealand with Wingnut called “Mortal Engines”, a really cool post apocalyptic sci-fi fantasy about cities that roll around on giant treads and eat everything in their paths for fuel and resources. “Mortal Engines” is based on the works of author Phillip Reeve and his so far five books targeted towards a youth audience.

But as we know, these books for tots can be even more adult than so called adult fiction. I think half the time these authors just write for no particular audience and the publisher decides for some reason or another to target the books this way. Neil Gaiman’s very adult and completely awesome novel “The Graveyard Book” immediately springs to mind. Books that are really easy to read and flow in your mind like they are coated in Teflon for some reason end up in the youth stacks. If you haven’t read “The Graveyard Book” book yet by the way, you really, really need to.

The story for the Peter Jackson film is going to be set around the London city mobile which is built in a rising multi tiered fashion with the poor folks smushed into the middle bottom. The London city machine is topped with St Paul’s Cathedral, the only pre-apocalyptic structure still in existence. That sounds very cool. Does this stuff seem adult to you? Does to me.

The Dominion Post is breaking the story and it’s all via the kind folks at /Film. Thanks fellas.

  1. That sucks, I had hoped that Jackson would do “Temeraire” first.
