Guy Ritchie Probably Leaving Lobo to do Sherlock Holmes Sequel

Let’s face it, the possibility of movie based on D.C. Comics’ interplanetary, bountyhunting badass Lobo should fill every comic book geek and sci-fi nut with glee. If you’ve read the comics, then you know Lobo is probably un-D.C. as a comic book from that publishing house can get. It spent a lot of time making fun of all the colorful characters that populate the D.C. universe (when it’s not killing or maiming them), and what’s more, it’s gratuitously violent, unnecessarily vulgar, and completely un-kid friendly. And they’re going to make a live-action movie based on it! Holy shit.

According to producer Joel Silver, the plan is to still make “Lobo” for Warner Bros., except now there’s a very real chance the movie will go on ahead with a new director other than Guy Ritchie calling the shots. The culprit, according to this LA Times article, is Warner’s insistence that Ritchie and Silver do a sequel to the $400 million dollar hit “Sherlock Holmes” ASAP, which leaves “Lobo” in the lurch.

You’ll also recall that recently Robert Downey Jr., the star of “Sherlock Holmes”, had to drop out of his and director Jon Favreau’s “Cowboys and Aliens” (he’s reportedly being replaced on the film by Daniel Craig). The reason, it now seems obvious, was to quickly get a “Sherlock Holmes” sequel into production.

Even without Ritchie, though, Silver sounds sure the WB is still interested in getting “Lobo” made as a movie. If it does happen, Silver will produce along with Akiva Goldsman and Andrew Rona.

Watch your back, Guy Ritchie! No one dumps the Main Man!
