Gareth Edwards has become a wanted man after his low-budget “Monster” made a huge splash on the Hollywood scene. People are taking notice, and the director has now been signed on to direct Legendary and Warner Bros.’ reboot of the “Godzilla” franchise.

Legendary picked up the rights to the giant lizard from Japan’s Toho Co. in March 2010. It was around that time that Edwards’ Monsters made its premiere at SXSW (where WME quickly signed him for representation) before moving on to the Toronto International Film Festival and a U.S. release by Magnet Releasing in October.

Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing along with Dan Lin, Roy Lee, and Brian Rogers.

Gareth will now sit down with a writer to work out the details for Godzilla’s latest escapades in the States. Or perhaps they’ll set it in Tokyo. Ol Atomic Breath’s still got a bone or two to pick with those folks.
