George Lucas Stars On The Daily Show In The Most Arrogant Interview Ever

Oh George. Can’t anyone get through to you? I thought that perhaps Jon Stewart, among the most trusted people in media , could somehow shine a light into that perfect world of yours where George knows best and the rest of us hate Jar Jar Binks because we’re just too old to understand.

I watched the interview this week on the Daily Show with my fingernails digging rivets into my palms. Now my eye tic is back too. People didn’t like Episodes 1-3 because they sucked, not because we didn’t understand them. They were bad movies. Mr. Lucas doesn’t understand that Star Wars is what it is because of a partnership and a contract between George and the fans. George builds a great universe and fills it with good story and we, the fans, obsess. That’s the deal. I’m beginning to think, based on Mr. Lucas’ attitide that we just won’t get to see any live action Star Wars of the quality of the first three movies until George passes the torch along to someone else. If you missed the interview and you live in the States, here it is. If you’re outside the U.S. like me, you’ll track it down on your local comedy network feed I’m sure. Get ready to cringe.

…That wasn’t arrogant at all, it was just the opposite in fact. He was not wrong at all stating that people of different generations like different pieces of the saga. I hate to burst your bubble, but plenty of people do in fact like the prequel trilogy, they just tend to be quite a bit younger. Plus, Episode III is widely considered the third best movie of the entire saga and its an opinion that I agree with. I have no idea what you were watching, but Lucas came out seeming very down to earth and quite funny in this interview. From what I can tell, your article is written more through your bias against Lucas, rather than on the merit of the actual review.

Your article title reeks of sensationalism I see practiced in tabloids, and we know what people’s opinion of those are…I have to agree with Varun. I saw no arrogance from Lucas. He came across as humble and someone very passionate about his art. Also Episode 3 did not suck. That’s just your personal opinion, don’t label everyone with your opinion, “People didn’t like Episodes 1-3 because they sucked”. Go gauge what fans think on forums, read sites like Rotten Tomatoes before you state your facts. Personally I think Revenge of the Sith was the best of the lot.

Well I obviously disagree. Even Jon Stewart was trying to get George to just come out and admit that the final three were not quite up to the standards of the first 3 saying that his son liked Phantom the best and Jon said that no, that couldn’t be his favorite..Saying “whatever” to your own fans general (and pervasive) criticism is arrogant in my opinion.

As the parent of two kids under 10 who LOVE Star Wars, I can completely related to Lucas’ comments on the Daily Show. While I find the first three movies somewhat painful to watch, my kids love them. They love the Clone Wars series even more and their favorite “action figures” are of characters from the cartoons. While each individual movie has its flaws (and bad acting), you have to admire his ability to weave a story more than 30 years ago that still fascinates people of all ages . . .

The new episodes suck in an horrible way. 1976′s ones are WAY better with much less money, much better actors and script.

Georce Lucas should remain as writer and producer. As director, he destroyed the new Episodes and also Indy 4.

Pls Mr.Lucas, do a favor to all us and stay away from the cameras! And also give us a favor and don’t use CGI in that horrible abusive way you did.

Man, when is are the twenty-something males going to get over their obsession with bad mouthing George Lucas? They should go back to drooling over the latest Batman flick, that movie pandered to this group just like Twilight did to the teen girls, and they lapped it up like puppy dogs.

George has said it many times: if you didn’t like the movies, then you didn’t like them. Get over it. If a movie doesn’t meet your expectations, then perhaps it’s your expectations that are off. Not all movies have to be designed to meet the acceptance of teen and twentysomething males, even the ones that look like they should.

Is GL arrogant? Yes, to a degree. But I assure you this: if you become as wildly successful as GL, regardless of the current level of criticism of your work, you too will appear arrogant upon questioning, too. The ONLY way these twentysomething males will think he does not appear arrogant is if he were to meet their fantasies and come out and say that his own movies are awful. But he knows they aren’t awful, quite the contrary, and he has the data to back it up.

So go back and fantasize about the demise of GL in private as you rearrange your Heath Ledger shrine.

More importantly, the reason why he was there was that book.. And the best Jon Stewart could say about it was that it’s like one of those Baseball sports book filled with ‘interesting little facts’… Jesus F.C.. that’s got to be the most boring book ever.

The problem is that episode 3 did not suck as bad as the other two films and plot holes the size of deathstars could be driven through them all still. His scripts are aweful (watch some of the behind the scenes from the first movie before they were rewritten), the “love”/stalker theme throughout could make hallmark chickfliks by the score, and leaps of logic that fail.
GL is an awesome and great visionary, but he needs to keep more hands off camera side of things. My problem is that Star Wars original trilogy were very good and the these movies were not. I think that the special effects got in the way of the story in this case.

I still don’t get how some “true” fans of Star Wars manage to brainwash themselves that the prequels are actually worse than Return of the Jedi. Return of the Jedi simply rehashed the threat of Star Wars, i.e. the Death Star; turned Han Solo from a cynical character who balanced the story from being absurd to a complete lovesick uninteresting puppy; reintroduced Yoda in the movie just to kill him off in five minutes; made the villain the Emperor, a two-dimensional cackling magician; and tied up all the loose ends with terribly lazy deliveries and execution. The entire movie just lacked passion and it really felt as if Lucas just wanted to be done with Star Wars and finish it off

Sure I wasn’t a big fan of Episode I or II (honestly Revenge of the Sith was a movie I unexpectedly loved) but at LEAST Lucas tried to make the story different from the previous movies. While people can complain all they want about the acting and SFX (as if Return of the Jedi didn’t suffer from these problems as well), at least it was all ambitious and there was a sense of passion behind it. If anything the prequels (especially Revenge of the Sith) made certain scenes in Return of the Jedi have more resonance than they initially did. Scenes like Yoda warning Luke to not underestimate the Emperor became MUCH more powerful thanks to the prequels.

People say the only reasons the Prequels were successful were because it was hanging off the original’s coat tails. Well I think Return of the Jedi with its half-assed quality is more of a glaring example of that than the prequels. I can’t stand Return of the Jedi, I’m sorry.
