Wait, so it’s NOT a book about teen vampires? Huh, go figure. Instead, “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s first adult book, “The Host” is a sci-fi tale with aliens. Weird, parasitic aliens of some kind.
Variety reports that Andrew Niccol is set to adapt Meyer’s book and direct the movie, with Meyer staying closely involved. After her “Twilight” books hit it big, “The Host” has been heavily sought-after by various producers, but Meyer has turned them all down. When Niccol got involved, though, she finally agreed. Why? Apparently because Niccol’s “The Truman Show” (which he wrote) and “Gattaca” (wrote and directed) are two of her top 5 favorite sci-fi movies.
More about “The host” at Meyer’s official site:
Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed.
When Melanie, one of the few remaining “wild” humans is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading “soul” who has been given Melanie’s body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.
Wanderer probes Melanie’s thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer’s mind with visions of the man Melanie loves—Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body’s desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.
In some hands, that may end up a sappy love story with sci-fi romance. I’m hoping Niccol will do something more with it.
Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz (“The Road”) were the slick producers who put the project together with their own money. Considering how much in demand Meyer is right now, they’ll probably have their pick of which studio to take the movie to.

Niccol avoided turning The truman Show soppy as well, I think he'll be great!
