Frank Miller to Direct Big Screen Buck Rogers?Buck Rogers (2010) Movie, Sci-Fi Movie News — By Nix on May 9, 2008 |
Yes, if everyone has their way, apparently. According to movie site IGN, negotiations are currently under way between Nu Image/Millennium Films (the same people responsible for “Rambo” and the upcoming “Conan” remake) and “Sin City”/”300″/”The Spirit” director Frank Miller to take the helm of the big screen version of Buck Rogers in the 25th century or thereabouts. How it happen, and why, is very convoluted, but suffice it to say, Miller and the current holder of the Buck Rogers rights are buds, and since Miller is now a director … makes sense, right?
IGN has your convoluted connections:
Miller, we were told, is friends with Flint Dille, a comic book, TV and videogame writer and producer whose credits include serving as the story editor on the 1980s cartoon classics Transformers and G.I. Joe. Dille, according to his bio at the IMDB, inspired the name for Dillios, the lone Spartan survivor of the battle of Thermopylae, in Miller’s graphic novel 300.
Dille is the grandson of John Dille, the newspaper publisher of Philip Francis Nowlan’s Buck Rogers comic strips. The screen rights to the Buck Rogers character had long been held by Bruckheimer Films, who spent years developing an unrealized film adaptation, before they reverted back to the Dille Family Trust.
Flint Dille, who penned a Buck Rogers graphic novel in the 1990s, will write and produce the new Buck Rogers movie, which we were informed will be budgeted in the $40 million range. The cheapness of the low-budget effects will be a running joke in the movie, which will retain the campiness of the 1980s TV series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century starring Gil Gerard.
After the article was published and went out into the netsphere, IGN was contacted by Nu Image/Millennium Films who informed them that they were still “mulling over” directors. Yeah, right. If Miller, who is hotter than hot tomatoes at the moment, says he wants to direct, they’ll let him direct faster than you can say, “Please direct this movie for us? Pretty please?” But will he have the TIME, that’s the question. The guy is being attached to every project with a comic book past nowadays, it seems, except “Ronin”, based on his own comics, which is really where we want him instead of that guy from “Stomp the Yard”.
Of course, I would like Nu Image more if they would ditch the “Conan” remake already. Seriously, what is the point of remaking that one? The original can’t be improved upon in any area as far as I’m concerned. It still holds up to this day.
Anyways, the only thing I care about in this big screen version of Buck Rogers? Who exactly will they get to play Wilma Deering that will be half as hot as Erin Gray?
According to IO9, “Buck Rogers” writer/producer Flint Dille is quoted as saying that Frank Miller will NOT, in fact, be directing “Buck Rogers”, although the studio is leaving the opportunity open for Miller, who is a friend of Dille’s, to do the gig if he so chooses. Translation: The studio put out feelers to Miller to direct the movie, but he didn’t bite. Although curiously, I09 doesn’t have a source for this, so we’ll see…
