Fox is Developing an American Version of Torchwood, Possibly Starring John Barrowman

Well this is interesting. I dig the BBC’s “Torchwood”, the “Doctor Who” spin-off show whenever I’ve stumbled across it, which unfortunately isn’t all that often. But I have liked what I’ve seen, and John Barrowman is aces as the show’s lead, and I’ve dug him since his “Doctor Who” days. Then again, maybe it’s just the whole “hey, that guy’s got an American accent!” on a very British show like “Who” that endeared him to me. News from THR is that Fox TV is currently developing an American version of Barrowman’s “Torchwood” as a backdoor pilot.

Now before you “Torchwood” and “Doctor Who” fans get your panties into a bunch and start screaming bloody murder, consider this: the adaptation is from the BBC, and more importantly, original series creator Russell Davies is onboard to write the script and will be shepherding it as a producer along with Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter. Not only that, but there’s a very real possibility that original star John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack on the show, might follow the adaptation to American shores as the male lead. This will probably mean the BBC version will be kaput, though I suppose it’s possible to field two identical shows at once, though unlikely.

The original “Torchwood” concerned a small group of investigators led by the immortal and high-tech Captain Jack as they secretly fight off a variety of alien problems. The original was mostly confined to England, but the U.S. version will take on a more global feel, which is very ironic, but there you have it.

Okay, guys, on the count of three -- one, two, three -- cool pose off!

Since FOX is doing this, are we going to see the 8th Doctor showing up as an occasional guest star? It wasn’t Paul McGann’s fault that the 1996 TV film had a viewing audience of about 30 people, maybe if we saw him a couple more times we’ll finally get to expand on the Time War story, and see his regeneration into the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston lives in LA now, I’m sure they can drag him to FOX studios for a day’s worth of work).

A strange show, “Torchwood,” The first season was dire, the second started badly but then found its stride halfway through, once they’d turned a major character into a walking corpse, and the third season (“Children of Earth”) was great. It’d be interesting to see what an American network would do with it but I fear the worst. British dramas have rarely benefited from being remade in the US.

I feel obliged to correct you, as you state that the original was “mostly confined to England” but it was made and set in another country Wales, Who do a great job making Doctor Who and Torchwood.

    Other than that great article.

I think they should find a way to resurect Ianto – his body was frozen by UNIT and the somehow bring him back. Realizing that Jack is never going to love him like he needs (he couldn’t say I love you even as Ianto was dying), he takes an offer to head up a US branch of Torchwood. Russell T Davies always said he knew where series 4 should go, so he can do that on BBC. Ianto lives and is the main character in the US version making many many fans happy (and bringing in a nice base audience of both US and overseas viewers). Imagine… two Torchwoods! (with the occasional crossover). Also, I like the idea of Ianto going from TeaBoy to boss. :)
