After a lot of speculation and hand wringing, here’s our very first look at the latest Stargate series from the Sci Fi Channel (or should we start calling it the SyFy Channel now?). Here’s the 30-second sneak peek teaser that was shown during Friday’s Battlestar Galactica series finale. It sure looks more like Battlestar Galactica than Stargate, so I guess showing it during BSG was appropriate.
Granted, it’s hard to tell a lot from a 30-second spot, but I think one thing is obvious: this is definitely not going the 90210 route as we originally feared. Then again, it’s also going more the BSG route than Stargate, at least at first impression. I can only guess that the Stargate people looked at the critical success (if not commercial success) of BSG and decided they wanted a piece of that (in my opinion, very undeserved) prestige, and this is the result.
Hey, I could be wrong, and maybe I am, but it sure doesn’t look like any Stargate I know. Maybe when Robert Carlyle said the show would be mostly human drama and feature less alien interaction, he was right on the money. I hope he was wrong, and I also hope my first impressions of the show based on this very short teaser is also wrong. I’d hate to see a Stargate show lose viewers because it was trying to be something it isn’t.
