In case you missed it, here’s the Super Bowl TV spot for George Lucas’ “Star Wars” re-releases in 3D. It’s hard not to get excited when you hear the music start up and the sound of lightsabers humming. Those are such iconic sounds, especially if you’re a sci-fi movie geek. Of course, then you realize that you’ll have to see that Godawful “The Phantom Menace” first, and the enthusiasm sort of dims somewhat. Can you just see the last 20 minutes of the film? I wonder if you can get a discount if that’s all you really want to see. Hell, I’ll settle for the Jedi-Darth Maul duel. The rest? Ugh. Even now, years later, still … UGH. Star Wars menaces theaters again (in 3D) starting this Friday.

I’m always down for discovering a new sci-fi movie that I’ve never heard of before. Here’s one: Wayne Slaten’s “Patriot Act”. The teaser doesn’t really give away too much, but here’s a little helpful synopsis to fill in some of the holes: Kane is a retired member of The Legion, a hit squad responsible for the extinction of an alien race. Set in a future communist America, Kane must now hunt a renegade Dropa alien intent on killing the former members of his team. Sounds like fun times. IMDB.com doesn’t list any cast, but you can keep track of the film at its Official Site and Facebook page. It definitely looks like it’s worth following up on. Hopefully we’ll see more in the future.

Did you missed the TV spots for “Battleship”, “John Carter”, and other sci-fi films during the Super Bowl this Sunday? Hey, I can see that happening. What with the game going on, the running to the bathrooms between punts, the eating your brains out, the getting all bloated from all the eating and sitting on the coach and then having to run to the bathroom. It’s a vicious cycle, to be sure. Thankfully for you, we have those TV spots below.
Official press release below. Universal Pictures, One Race Films and Radar Pictures announced today that principal photography has begun on the action-driven, sci-fi thriller Riddick. The shoot will take place in Montreal. The latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000′s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy. The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty. The first ship to arrive [...]

I have my issues with TNT’s “Falling Skies” TV show, and frankly, the only reason I’ll even bother with the second season when it premieres this Summer is because, damn, what else is there on TV? There’s a pretty big shortage of quality sci-fi shows, so I guess we better appreciate what we have, right? Terry O’Quinn joining the cast should make the show a little more bearable, even if it is just for a few lousy eps. The former “Lost” star, who has been making time on another beach in “Hawaii Five-0″, will be trading in the fun and sun for the battlefields of “Falling Skies” in the show’s Season 2. O’Quinn is scheduled to show up for a two-episode arc (the last two episodes of the coming season) as a former history professor and mentor to the show’s lead, Tom Mason, played by Noah Wylie. Hopefully it’ll be more than a, “Hey, remember when I used to teach [...]

Easily the best trailer for “John Carter” yet. It doesn’t only have a ton of new footage stuffed into its minute-long running time, but it’s a lot lighter, fluffier, and goofier trailer. Happier and more fun, if you will. That’s what I want in my sci-fi movies about guys transported to strange alien worlds with four-armed dudes carrying swords, and this trailer delivers that. Good stuff. Transplanted to Mars, a Civil War vet discovers a lush planet inhabited by 12-foot tall barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter a princess who is in desperate need of a savior.
Could happen. Variety reporter Jeff Sneider started the whole hullabaloo off by tweeting this about Russell Crowe’s possible involvement in the impending remake of “Robocop” by “Elite Squad” director José Padilha: Sure, Russell Crowe, MIGHT star in Aronofsky’s NOAH… but do you know what else he MIGHT star in? Three words: Ro. Bo. Cop. He’s referencing the fact that Crowe’s name was also recently linked to the movie “Noah” by Darren Aronofsky. It certainly sounds like ol Russell’s a very wanted man, and it’ll be up to him to decide which film he wants to go with. Personally, I’d like to see him as Noah in “Noah”, but whatever, he would make a good dead cop turned unstoppable killer cyborg too, I guess. He’s already got the fighting stuff down, I hear. Update: Russell Crowe has denied the “Robocop” reports, saying there is no truth to the rumor via Twitter. The film, directed by Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton, tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins).
