German director Roland Emmerich, aka the man who made death porn on a global scale (aka disaster films) popular again, blames the lack of a sequel to “Independence Day” on the studio’s unwillingness to pay Will Smith his due. And oh yeah, that guy George W. Bush is also to blame, too. In a roundtable interview with critics, Emmerich tells CinemaBlend that the reason why he hasn’t been enthusiastic about making an “ID4″ earlier is that Bush was in office at the time and, apparently, he didn’t want to make a movie about a heroic President rallying the world against evil alien invaders.
Says the Master of Disaster:
“In Independence Day, it was about a king who leads his country into a fight against an outside invader. I didn’t want to make that movie during the Bush years. It was not thought that George W. Bush would have made a great king. Now with Obama, it’s another story.”
Because, obviously, when you [...]

If you haven’t figured out what to get me for Christmas yet, allow me to point you in the right direction. According to Latemag.com, Enzo G. Castellari’s entire post-apocalypic saga — namely, “The Bronx Warriors,” “Escape From the Bronx,” and “The New Barbarians” — will be collected, packaged, and sold as The Bronx Warriors Trilogy, courtesy of the hard-working folks at Shameless Screen Entertainment. Granted, these movies aren’t really everyone’s cup of tea, so your own excitement may be somewhat tarnished if a) you’ve never heard of the films or b) you’d rather broil kittens than ever watch them again. Personally, I think they’re fantastic, and I’m eager to finally get my hands and a version that doesn’t look like its been sourced from a second-generation bootleg VHS. I’m sure the visual clarity will make make for a completely different experience.
Here are the specifics, straight from Latemag’s mouth:

The Wall Street Journal, of all places, currently has an article on Hollywood’s gold rush to make movies out of toys and board games following the phenomenal success of Michael Bay’s “Transformers”. Toward the end of the article, it mentions that “Star Trek’s” (and “Lost” mastermind) J.J. Abrams is currently in discussions to produce a movie based on the Japanese toy line Micronauts, which, coincidentally, Hasbro (the same people behind “Transformers”) has just acquired.
Opines Abrams on the validity of a “Micronauts” movie (and toy films in general):
“Sometimes, when someone is not a celebrity and you are casting them in a role, everyone who is in a seat of authority voices questions about that actor’s talent, sex appeal, looks, ability — their everything. But then they get the role, and suddenly they are on the cover of every magazine, and nobody questions those things again. In retrospect, everyone says, ‘Of course that person is a star.’”

Having been raised on the old school Trek and being of the advanced age to have actually watched the show while it was still on it’s network run, getting to know a new Spock was a little difficult.
I think Zackary Quinto did a fine job. The thing I think he missed was Nimoy Spock’s very carefully controlled sense of humour. Now I understand that Quinto Spock was young and young sometimes means taking things too seriously, but with Nimoy Spock you just felt that there was a smile always there, just under the surface of that logical mask. It was in his eyes too, that little glint.
So how did Zack Quinto end up taking the reins of the young Mr. Spock? This video tells the whole truth in complete detail. Very enjoyable. Thanks to the fine folks at i09 for the scoop.

You knew it had to happen: Dean and Sam Winchester REALLY breaks through the fourth wall in tonight’s episode of “Supernatural”, titled, “Changing Channels”. It looks like the apocalypse and all that end of the world stuff will just have to wait while the boys have to figure out how to escape the Trickster’s latest game — trapped inside some of America’s current crop of mindnumbingly SHITTY TV shows.
There should be plenty of funny, juicy bits here, that’s for sure. If “Supernatural” is one thing, it’s that it never really conformed to mainstream TV. Compare it to shows like your average “CSI” and its legion of clones, or “Grey’s Anatomy” and its legion of clones, and “Supernatural” just sings with originality.

Mandalay Pictures would like to make a movie based on the novel “Machine Man” by author Max Barry, only they don’t quite know how it’s going to end. Because, see, the book itself isn’t finished, and as we speak, Barry is putting one up one page from his novel online every day for people to read and make suggestions. Barry, we’re told, will then take suggestions from readers and, possibly, incorporate them as the book is written. Which is either the laziest way to write a novel, or sheer genius, I can’t quite decide. The uncertainty wasn’t enough to deter Mandalay, though, who snapped up the film rights.
“Machine Man” follows concerns a tech engineer who’s tired of going through life as an average and unnoticed nobody, so he does what any of us would do if we were a dork with geeky robot knowledge — he replaces parts of his body with titanium upgrades of his own design.
Roland Emmerich has an early Xmas present ready for all you fans of fine, tasteful and hysterical disaster movies. “2012″ will enrich all our Sci-Fi Holiday preparations with absolutely photo realistic footage of mother Earth undergoing an extreme makeover.
In the crumbly aftermath, who will remain? What will their lives be like? According to Entertainment Weekly, Roland is planning a sequel to “2012″ but this time as a series, called, in fine sequential style, “2013″. Emmerich and Howard Gordon (Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice) are in talks to do a show that will follow the Earthbound survivors of the really big disaster. The Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice connection really scares me but the concept is pretty awesome. A post apocalyptic drama. Nice.

Now that “V” seems to be off to a good start ratings wise I can stop stressing out and settle in to a possibly full season of lizards in disguise. 14 million viewers is a good number, it works. There will be a bit of a drop off probably since 14 million is a hard number to sustain but I’m feeling good. Good actors, really nice special effects and a twisty story with lizard loving humans that will balance out the human loving lizards. I wonder how humanity would really react if big whomping starships appeared over our cities? I guess it would depend on the city. Would the aliens have humans worshiping them? Damn right we would. Hell, we worship Britney, or some of us do (Nix).
Here’s a nice video where the cast reveal their thoughts on the show and their characters. Thanks Scifiwire.

First there were all those rumors of delays, network unhappiness with the episodes that have been produced so far (resulting in rewrites and reshoots), and now word is that “Chuck” veteran Scott Rosenbaum has moved over to “V” to replace Scott Peters as the show’s new showrunner.
It’ll be interesting to see the ratings for “V” after last night’s pilot premiere. The show currently has a 4-episode, 4-week order from the network, with ABC doing a wait-and-see strategy with their potentially expensive sci-fi show. Meaning, if the pilot and the subsequent three episodes perform well, the show will be back to finish its first season run. If it doesn’t … well, after all the advertising dollars ABC poured into the show heading into its launch, Anna and her buddies may be getting the shaft faster than expected.
As is always the case with network TV fare, the ratings will tell the tale…

I am confident in reporting that in “2012″, an imminent digital masterpiece by director Roland Emmerich, your favorite phallic monument or architectural wonder is going to be completely squashed. However, in deciding which statue, building, city or structure was going to be tidal waved, rolled, or dropped core-ward toward the spicy molten center of mother Earth, Roland had to be careful, because political correctness is taken a bit more seriously in some places.
Roland was thinking of cracking the Kaaba, the cube shaped thingy in the center of Mecca, where Muslim pilgrims come during the Hajj. Roland’s thoughts on this follow.
“Well, I wanted to do that, I have to admit,” Emmerich says. “But my co-writer Harald said I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie. And he was right. … We have to all … in the Western world … think about this. You can actually … let … Christian symbols fall apart, but if you [...]

Anna and her Visitor buddies are about to touch down tonight on ABC (in case you missed the gazillion commercials on TV last night), and this is your open discussion thread to talk about the pilot. Did you love it? Hate it? Somewhere in-between?
I saw a version of the pilot a while back in San Diego during Comic Con, and enjoyed it. (Read that review here.) Word is, the pilot showing tonight has some new footage, new scenes, and a spiffier ending thanks to some highly-publicized reshoots. That’s probably a good idea, because the original ending was a little … tame. Hopefully they won’t change too much.
“V” premieres tonight on ABC 8/9 Central.

Stargate Universe is a popular little Sci-Fi effort that seems to have a certain strange attraction to both Nix and I and you, out there, in the dark beyond the tubes. Some people like it, some people hate it, some people just watch, uncertain of how it as yet computes in their estimation. I want it to be good. How’s that?
This weeks episode, titled “Earth” looks a bit different. By Earth it looks like we have a tease referring to some possibility of the return of Destiny’s passengers to it. Obviously, the show would end if the principal castaways could return home. It would however be an interesting and creative way to get some of the less acting efficient cast members off the show without having them fall into a recycler, smushed in an airlock or devoured screaming by something scaly, oily and beautifully grotesque that is lurking under someones cot. Lets hope there are happy or at least [...]

Well, this, er, is not going to prove very fruitful. Apparently tired of all the “Stargate: Universe” bashers showing up at his blog and leaving, well, SGU bashing comments, SGU producer/writer Joseph Mallozzi has responded with a long statement on his blog.
Besides addressing the overall negativity of “Stargate” loyalists who haven’t seen the light, Mallozzi also addresses some of the more hostile reactions to the show. Unfortunately, I’m afraid he’s only going to keep the “conflict” going by addressing it, which is probably not the intent.
On the negativity towards his cast/crew:
Sadly, the negativity has also taken its toll on one-time regular Sherry, proud mother of actor Brian J. Smith, who, surprised and saddened by some of the hostility here, has elected to no longer read the blog. Also, after several months of connecting with fandom online, Brian is stepping away from his popular twitter account for much the same reason. Some of the very same fans [...]

My significant spouse and I are debating whether to go to “2012″. I, naturally, am firmly in the “Yup” camp as destruction of this quality and scope comes perhaps once in a Sci-Fi movie going lifetime. The spouse unit thinks that maybe the movie could be depressing and perhaps a “cryer”. A sobbing wife in public is a troubling thing, fraught with hormonal minefields with plenty of room for stupid husbandy fumblings. So, I may go alone and make it a reporters outing. I’m with you Roland!
Here’s an interview with John Cusak, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Amanda Peet as they wax on about their feelings about that date thing and their experiences working on the film. Thanks Comingsoon.
A snip:
Q: What are your personal thoughts of what will happen in 2012?
John Cusack: Do you know the book, “The Return of Quetzalcoatl”? That book, I think, is a little more in line with what I think will happen; a shift in consciousness. That [...]
